TN: 08, 09, 10 Mugneret Gibourg Vosne-Romanée

I had these over the last couple weeks. All were pop and pour and drunk over several hours.

Lovely florals, Vosne spice and cherry fruit on the nose. On the palate, it’s elegant and mid weighted with less breadth and depth than the 10. It’s brighter and redder fruited than the '10 with a little sweet tart confectionary note on the back end. Rhubarb, cherry, cranberry and some mossiness and basil undertones. This drinks with a purity like mineral water. The comparatively brighter acid brings a freshness and sense of clarity that I enjoy, but the wine lacks the sap, cohesion, and overall Zen of the '10. Mouthwatering on the back end. Outstanding in a more linear and restrained mode. (91 pts.)

  Significantly riper nose than the '10 or '08. Vosne spice, cherry fruit, and florals on the nose. Sappy and dense with more spice, red pinot fruit bordering at times on preserves, hard candy, and deft wood spice on the palate. It’s round, fleshy yet silky in texture, perfumed and fruity, but still manages to hold itself together. This does for me border on overripe. It steps right up to the line and then stops. Baroque and deep, yet with grace and good balance for it’s size, with more stuffing than most village wines. Finishes firm yet broad, and interesting contrast. I like this quite a bit, but would much prefer to drink the '10 any day. I can say that for most red Burgs though. (91 pts.)

  Lovely perfume. Vosne spice, cherry fruit, florals on the nose. On the palate, it’s deep, yet precise and very detailed for a village wine. Supple, yet with great lift and freshness. There is a purity and sense of focus that is a cool contrast to the sap and breadth of this over performing wine. Beautiful fruit, spice and balance. Quite long on the back end. A terrific, harmonious wine drinking at early peak. (93 pts.)

One of my favorite producers. I felt it was a good time to check in on these wines. I initially wanted to compare the 09 and 10, but I accidentally pulled the 08 instead of the 09. I am glad I did. It was great lesson in vintage comparison. Each of these wines showed the vintage character very well. They spoke of their terroir and of their producer. These were all very enjoyable wines ranging in styles from the overt and supple 09, to the inward and firmer 08, with the '10 having the best of everything.

Always winning wines, and love the sisters. From way back in 2011 from my visit there, the 2009 Vosne:

“20-25% new oak. Vines are right outside the winery door. They use Rousseau, Francois Freres and Berthomieu barrels. Fantastic perfume, full of gorgeous strawberry, baking spices, especially nutmeg and cinnamon, and a clear mocha note. Le gout is lovely for a villages wine, a littel tobacco at the back end to go with black raspberry and black strawberry. It is very tasty in all parts of the mouth. Really excellent.”


You are right, Don, so hard to find now. Very fortunate to have snagged a bottle of 2006 NSG Chaignots in Calgary this week. May bring that down for the annual visit.

Thanks for reading everyone. It is, for me, a little bittersweet drinking these. These are wines I took for granted would be available ad infinitum. I am happy to have what I have, but my total allocation this year was nearly nonexistent. It does make them more special when you drink one.

David, I think your description is spot on. they are wines worth treasuring.

Mike, I tasted the 09s at the domaine as well and they were beautiful then. Such breadth and poise at the time. I especially remember loving the village Vosne. I loved the price tag then too. Pretty special stuff.

great story there and great people. I had the good fortune many years ago to have a lunch at their home with a vertical of Echezeaux. Their mom made gougeres when we tasted in the cellar. As many know, the sisters took over in 1988 with the untimely death of their ophthalmologist winemaker father, helped by neighbors. Now they are spectacular winemakers and the only negative is how costly their wines are to those of us who love them.
