TN: 2017 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon (USA, Washington)

#1 Post by John Glas » July 8th, 2019, 7:42 pm

  • 2017 Substance Cabernet Sauvignon - USA, Washington (6/27/2019)
Day 1: Love the synthetic corked. All wine should go to this closure or screw cap. Fragrant nose featuring plums, spice, cherry, wood and menthol. Medium plus finish. This continues to be one of the best under $20 Cabernet wines on the market. Hard to beat. 89 points
Day 2: Even better on day 2. Cherry, perfume, menthol, spice, oak and plum. Medium plus finish. 90 points (90 pts.)

Still really tight. The 2015 is really drinking well and 2016 is a year or so away.

Serious winemaking goes into this $15-17 bottle of wine, Charles and Brennon take it very seriously.

Native Yeast Ferments
Whole Berry Ferment
30+ Days on Skins
Aged on Lees
50% New French Oak
ITB

Profit margins must be slim but I am not complaining. They do a great job on all of their wines.

I picked up a bottle at Costco today and agree with the sentiment that it is a solid wine. At $13 it’s a great weekday Cab.

I tried it back to back with a Simi Cab, also from Costco at sale price of $13, and preferred the Substance Cab.

Mondavi Napa for a bit more used to be solid for under $20 but that has fallen flat. There are not many good Cabs under $20 but Substance gets the weekdays covered or your weekend non wine geek friends covered.
