2015 Shafer HSS offer

#1 Post by Tom Chen » June 25th, 2019, 9:18 am

Offer out at $310/bottle and $625/mag.

Increase of $15 from 2014.

I have been a regular buyer of HSS (I love the wine), but last year was the first year I only bought one bottle (typical 3 with a mag in various years).

This may be and probably is the year I stop buying. I have these going back to 2001, so tough decision, but as others have said in other topics, so many really good wines out there and much lower costs.

What are others doing?

I guess I can be talked into another purchase . . . [truce.gif]

It’s great wine if you like the style. I got off the train with the 2010 release.

I was going to say that this is the price increase that pushed me off the list, but looking at my records I apparently didn't order last year either. I do really enjoy the wine, so it's not a trivial decision for me, but it is starting to feel a little above my comfort zone as an annual buy.

Sean,

Did you get the email offer? I ask because Shafer says to stay on the list, you must buy at least one bottle.

Wonder if that one-bottle purchase rule is somewhat flexible.

Not that it would really affect my decision for this offering, but maybe.

I did get the email. I suppose it's possible I bought last year, but it's not in Cellartracker and I couldn't find the order confirmation.

The 2014 sold for $295 from the winery. If you have Wine Searcher Pro, do a search on the 2014 HSS. There are 4 pages of stores selling the wine around the country! Low price is $245, and there are 40 stores selling it below $290. I think this wine is over distributed as it appears to be very easy to procure it in the open market versus getting locked in to a mailing list. Now that Parker is not around to give it 105 points in ripe vintages like 2007, every vintage is going to have the same demand profile.

Has anyone ever tasted the HSS and the Odette Reserve Cabernet? Both are now at similar price levels, and the vineyards are separated by what, two miles at most?

Would be interested to hear anyone's experiences, thanks...

I skipped buying from the list last year and still received an offer this year. This one is generally readily available at retail for less than list price. Plus never been fond of Shafer’s shipping costs. It’s my wife’s favorite so will continue to purchase via retail.

As stated above, the wine is readily available at retail. Texas has seen recently HSS, One Point Five and Red Shoulder Ranch at price points well below release from the winery.

That's actually a great comparison. IMO they have similar styles, more classic and muscular. Based on 2013 Shafer which I tried about 6 months prior to us having the 2013 Odette Reserve, the Odette was clearly the better wine. However, if 2015 is similar to 2002 (as some have said), the Shafer might be a totally different wine; a more feminine style? Btw, has anyone tried the 2015 Shafer, no notes on CT.

Not the HSS, but last Friday the 1.5 was a monster that would have benefited from a LONG decant.

$310 from the mailing list when it sells for substantially less in the seconady market? They have to know it’s too much! Léoville Las Cases 2016 for less as well, they need to know this, and they also need to know that as good as Hillside Select is, it’s not 2016 Las Cases!

The pro move for Shafer at this point would be to list the wine at $310 or whatever, but then offer a modest "deal" to their mailing list customers. Buy six, get 15% off and free shipping, or something like that. Now they're paying $263 a bottle, getting in slightly under retail, but Shafer gets to list the official price as $310.

How many other Napa wines 'at this caliber and price' are as readily available in the retail market as HSS is - and at either close to release price? Just curious . . .

Larry...Names like Insignia, Monte Bello and Mondavi Reserve come to mind. Though at a lower price point, they are widely available at retail.

Very disappointed that Shafer has risen to this price point. Obviously they think the market can bear, though they make a ton of it!

It's $1 shipping if you order a 6 pack. That's the only break really.

I'm on the fence with this one. Love the wine and have bought off the list for some time. I spoke to a local retailer and I can get it for less than mailing list. The only thing they won't get is Mags. So I will likely buy a mag and get the 750's locally. The $300 mark was my threshold. Tough call.

these are great wines but as mentioned, you can find these all over at retail....I would rather buy Spottswoode than HSS at this point, thought not buying much Napa Cab these days...

I've been on the list since 1997, but I'm dropping this year. I may buy a couple bottles at retail, but there's really no reason to buy direct, given the ready availability at retail. I actually think the comparison to Phelps Insignia is a good one. I love that wine, but have never been on the list because there's no advantage to it. When a winery is producing 10,000+ cases, the mailing list option rarely makes sense.

A buddy forwarded his "allocation" to a couple of us. Considered for a minute, went online to KL to check retail pricing and got sucked into an expiring auction for HSS 2008.....5 minutes later I've got two bottles reaching prime @$190 each.
Provenance seemed solid and as I get older I'm losing patience.

I may buy a mag. Went to several different stores around here and mag's are still tough to get. 750's can be had at or below mailing list price but apparently they are stingy with the bigger formats.

I dropped off a couple vintages back. It's a great wine. Consistently one of the best in Napa, so in the world. But, I can almost always find it at retail for the same price and usually less. Even the 100 pointers. Now, if you want the Mags, it might be a different story. Still, I don't think there is any rarity factor.

I usually only buy one bottle a year at this point. There are not that many nights I want to open a $300 bottle of wine.

For what it's worth I have enjoyed several vintages from the late '90s and '00s, but the last few vintages have been way too alcoholic for my tastes. I tasted the 2012, 2013, and 2014 at the winery and was not at all happy with the huge alcohol burn. Needless to say, I've stopped buying

You can buy this wine directly at Shafer's facility when they release it, until sold out, which I have to believe at $310 per is going to take them a while. I also stopped buying last year but still received the offer. I do like the wine but hard to justify at that price.

The Shafer is $310 while the Dunn HM is $130, and not too alcoholic.

Was on Shafer's list but got tired of seeing Relentless and 1.5 at TW for $20 less per bottle.

We love Hillside Select but at this price it's a one per vintage for us so can wait around to find a good deal. Only risk is if it winds up being a WA100 then it goes out of my price range. Picked up a single bottle of '14 with a wine.com $100 off so came in at $225.

Im sorry, as much as I like all of the wines you mentioned. None of them compare to Shafer Hillside Select. I bought my full allotment. Are there little niche wines here or there that I’m buying more of? Sure. But what wines are you prepared to say taste better than Shafer? Serious question.
All wines are going up in price. To me, SHS is worth every penny extra than the wines you mentioned. Additionally, all the wines you mentioned can be found cheaper at retail as well.
And as an NJ resident, SHS is NOT readily available retail without the additional shipping.
So I just disagree on the value.
I look at value with each new vintage and culled my list like anyone else but Shafer makes the cut every year.

I have no opinion on Shafer (never had it), but Ridge Monte Bello is available *substantially* cheaper than retail through their futures program (40% discount?)
