Recently had the 1979 Sociando, and it was simply GREAT.
This one:
Well
This is OK mature…
The nose alone… This is why I love wines cellared long enough
I also intend to pop the 1970 and 1974 soon
Beat that Alfert [berserker.gif]
My palate is more Yak-like than yours champagne.gif champagne.gif

Lol buddy, I have some 1970 coming soon…

And I’ll take a pic of it next to a 1970s work of Art I have from a French-inspired artist!

Excellent note, sounds delicious.

H Claus,

Glad to hear the '79 Sociando-Mallet was great- have never had the pleasure to drink that wine. I recently popped bottles of '79 Haut Marbuzet and Belair and both were outstanding examples of the vintage (though the Belair was maddeningly very, very slightly corked, so left us longing for a pristine bottle…). Fully agree on your notes on the 1979 Magdelaine, a nice old wine, but not one of the top years at this estate. These days, I can often find more pleasure drinking a fully mature, solid, but not spectacular wine than drinking a great, great wine that is opened woefully too young. I have long outgrown infanticide when it comes to legendary wines broached before their time…

All the Best,

John

I have always said, I’d rather have a mature 90-point wine than a new release, 95+ point wine. Sadly, I have more young wines than mature wines.

Thank you for chiming in John
The 1979 was certainly a great experience for me
Great enough to not being afraid of opening an even lesser vintage.

The 1979 Sociando was fresh and with attractive tannins.
Going to have a small 80’s vertical soon (85,86,88,89)

But the Sociando did not posses the attractive fragrance of the Magdelaine

All the best to you too
Claus

Amen.
