It’s raining again/still, time to do a cellar inventory.

I can swear I see skin growing between my fingers and toes, the new evolution of living in Californnia. With rain still falling in May I am stuck indoors so why not do what I have been putting off? Been 2-1/2 years since me last inventory. I’ll bet I have over 100+ bottles to add and probably that much or more to delete. Stats when I’m done.

Are you putting your inventory off? How about a list of reasons why we avoid doing it? No, not doing a poll.

Mine isn’t great as I am split between my offsite and the basement of a rental home while we build our new house. I’m doing a terrible job at tracking what is here and what we are drinking. I plan to inventory on the way in to the new cellar as we move in. Given how much is in my locker, that ought to be done by fall 2020.

The Sun is shining in Denmar, that’s my
excuse.Sitting om the porge with a glas of Wine.

The last time I did an inventory, having a little over 2000 bottles at the time, I swore I would never do it again. I would just keep track of what I added to or took out from my cellar. I have my inventory on an excel spreadsheet. I simply keep a sheet of paper in the cellar and I do not take a bottle of wine out of the cellar without quickly scribbling it down on the paper, nor do I stick a bottle from my counter into the racks without jotting it down on the paper. Every few weeks, usually when the paper is getting full or if I am feeling industrious, I take the paper to my desktop and update the excel spreadsheet. That takes me about 15 minutes. Why do I keep to my plan of NEVER moving bottles into or out of my cellar without jotting them down? Because I remember how much of a pain in the ass it was doing an inventory. Well, it works for me.

I do it when it snows in January each year.

Hey Brian, the sun just came out here and I’m only 10 miles from you. Save that inventory stuff till November

Tom

I’d have to move 30+ cases off the floor of the cellar just to start inventory. Can’t even get into the cellar without a shoehorn.

Same problem. I only drink the bottles I can reach by leaning in from the doorway.

That sounds pleasurable. [cheers.gif]

I start every once in a while…then I find a bottle and go “oh!” and open it and forget what I was doing…

John, as I have told you before, keeping your wines sitting on and around your furnace is not a good option.
It is time you expand into another room…maybe your wife’s sewing room, or her gift wrapping room, or perhaps the living room.

Well, it’s raining in SoCal, today.

Nope. Not going to inventory wine, today. Maybe I’ll rearrange my sock drawer.

The last time I did it was two years ago. We had a pipe burst, and that required a lot of repairs downstairs which, of course, required moving around most of the downstairs furnishings–and wine inventory. My collection is modest, and I do not require off-site storage. So, I had to move the entire stash upstairs. When all the work was completed, and it was time to repopulate, the downstairs storage, I started with CellarTracker and, so, it was convenient to update it as I went along.

We did the full monty 3 years ago when all the wine was moved into the new house’s cellar. Figured we might as well, since we had to rack it all (or most) anyway. Got the whole thing bottle perfect and organized by region, producer, wine and vintage. It took days, working pretty much all day against the clock, trying to finish ahead of the coming heat wave since the main house’s AC wasn’t up yet. All the bottles fit in the cellar, you see, but they didn’t fit in the cellar in their transport/shipping boxes…Since then we’ve been strict about keeping track, since we are NEVER doing that again.

I’ve never understood why people don’t enjoy doing their inventory. Usually about once a year I find a bottle stashed someplace I forgot I put it and I love that feeling. Granted I’ve only got about 600 bottles…but I find it peaceful and relaxing.

Actually, now that I think about it, I do my cellar inventory many nights in bed when I’m trying to go to sleep. It’s a great way to blot out the stresses of the day–much like counting sheep.

Give or take I do it quarterly. However I also keep track in real time which bottles I’ve acquired/consumed. So the quarterly is really just a quick true up. I’m not as fortunate as you kids - I rarely find something I didn’t know I had. Usually the opposite - 2-3 bottles short from when either my wife was enjoying a weeknight bottle on her own, or we had guests over and didn’t bother updating CT.

Last time I did an inventory, I discovered I was off by 20%. That was both a good and a bad day.

That sunshine was short lived Tom, ended up spending quite a few hours on the task. All my wine has been moved to new locations since my last inventory so I had to relocate each bottle into a new bin numbering system. About 2/3 of the way through and I’ve added 144 bottles, removed 27 and have another 47 in limbo. Then I run a CT search for items outside my bins that need deletion.

Yup: Reconciling your inventory - CellarTracker Support

It’s so easy to keep inventory relatively up to date, each month I do a shelf in my locker, remove some bottles from boxes, replace with others, jot down the changes on a paper word doc, then update the doc periodically.
