TN: 2002 Domaine de Courcel Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots

  • 2002 Domaine de Courcel Pommard 1er Cru Grand Clos des Épenots - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru (5/18/2019)
Decanted for 40 minutes. Darker ruby color. Nose of piercing red mulberry and raspberry fruit amidst briar, floral notes, and fecund earth. Layers of dark red plum, tart gooseberry, brambles, iron, and traces of holiday cake on the palate laced with earthy notes just this side of rusticity. Ample acidity and structured tannin leading to a long finish of stone, grip, and sappy red fruit. Striking wine just beginning its upward arc, a quintessential Pommard. (92 pts.)

Thanks foe the note Doug, had one a couple of years ago and thought it still quite young. Sounds like more time is required.

cheers Brodie

Thanks for the note, Doug. Don’t have the 02 Epenots, just the Rugiens, and wasn’t planning on opening one for another five years or more. It sounds like my intuition was good, but it’s good to have some degree of confirmation.

Brodie and Lee,

Yes would agree, if you just have a few more time in the cellar is warranted. This is a slow moving train.

Cheers,
Doug

Thanks Doug. Pleased to say I have some in the cellar and won’t be touching for awhile thanks to this tasting note.

Reece,

It is a very good wine. Hope it shows well for you when you open one.

We visited your fair city and some lovely parts of the north island several years ago and will not soon forget it.

Cheers!
Doug
