Anyone seen, gotten, or received any 2015 Benetiere yet?

Tasting notes, varietals, grapes - anything related to wine

Just got my hands on one of my bottles from Panzer. Will be opening sometime in the next couple of weeks.

What does it mean that my bottle has THREE labels on it?

Opened two bottles from my recent shipment from Panzer.

Good from pop and pour. Way better than the first bottle I had. Really pretty wines. Lots of fruit but not hot / over ripe/ alcoholic. Even had one open for 36 hours and still showed well - strong acid, light fleshy fruit and good structure.
Oh interesting, thanks for the note. Going to try one in a week or two; what would you say is ideal decant time?
Based on the last two - decant and just drink
Had a Polaner turned Panzer bottle this weekend and totally agree. Went into a decanter but was good/pretty from the start.

So did Polaner actually think the wine is flawed or is it a case of it now needs to be hand sold due to the labeling issue? I’d imagine It would be hard for retail to constantly explain the label issues on a $100+ wine.

They had no problem selling it with these labels. They recalled it due to complaints of it being cooked. But I think enough people have tried it now to know the wine is not cooked.

Not that it wasn't absurd at the time, but in retrospect, the idea that the color could change from vibrant purple to aged garnet in under an hour was probably the first sign that it was all bullshit

Didn’t taste cooked to me, but why recall it based on a couple complaints? That doesn’t add up, just give the purchaser their money back. You would only recall it if you won’t stand behind it. They didn’t want to and why would they drop that bomb on the Benetiere family for no reason? If I’m Benetiere I’m looking for a new importer. This is one reason why I enjoy buying from guys like Robert though even if it is a couple more bucks (although in this case it’s way less).

Not sure I understand your meaning. I've seen wine colors change quite dramatically in a short span before.

I have recently tasted this wine twice in the last month....both bottles from different sources (a Polaner turned Panzer bottle...and a grey market bottle out of France with the wine's original label w/ Cote Rotie scribbled out in pen)...

Both bottles showed very well.

Polaner has been around a long time and is also very close to Mannie Berk.
I think your comments are a bit naive. The feeling could be mutual.

Just opened a bottle of the white Vin de France Le Riollement, which came in at the same time as the Cote Rotie. It’s very weird.

So, it is showing precisely the same as any other typical Northern Rhone white wine, then? I think that supports the view that there is nothing wrong with the Benetiere.

I’m loath to wade in here - actually, not true at all, Alfert likes drama - but will regardless.

Just got my 2015s yesterday from Panzer. FWIW, his delivery is pristine. Perfect storage.

P&P. Just got back from a business function, am a bit wired, figured I’d play with this wine a bit tonight and then tomorrow. I’m now into my second glass.

There ain’t nothing wrong with this wine at all. It’s proper.

What it is, is, young. Raw, a little jagged and disjointed, but the materials are solid, so fresh, savory, peppery, nice touch of blood red oranges. I’m actually finding it less ripe than many 2015s, which is a good thing. Will post more notes tomorrow when I finished the bottle, but thus far I am liking very much what I see, and would stash these things away while you drink the more open years like 2011 and 2012.

Of course, my commentary is just about what I got from Panzer.

Great to read, Robert. How are you storing the wine until tomorrow? Are you putting the residual in a 375ml bottle, or just putting in a fridge? It sounds like you could just put the original bottle with the undrunk wine in the fridge for tomorrow.

Thanks, Jeremy.

I normally do not geek out over the overnight storage of young wines that I have opened, especially a hardy grape like syrah. I just shove the cork down hard and put it in a regular fridge where it gets darn cold. Almost every young wine I drink the next day is close to the same and quite often actually better. Beaujolais, less so.* I do not generally do this with mature wines, however. I have zero concerns with a Cote Rotie over night in the fridge.

* I wish I could buy every Beaujolais in 375. I found some Roillete last year in this format. Perfect for midweek drinkers with a nice meal. My wife doesn’t drink them, and I do not think they show the same the next day, so an ideal format. Thivin is one exception, a hardy wine.

I just googled that out of curiosity. Consider me surprised by the current street price, not just on 2015, but on other vintages. They are running 2-3x original release, for the most part. If you are seeking to grab some, Jared, I’d buy 2010-2013 over 2015. Not a disparagement of 2015 at all, which I liked, but I like the others more. I think 2010 and 2013 are built for the long haul and may be best in the long run, while 2011’s transparency and minerality and 2012’s fruit-forwardedness without being over-ripe, are quite appealing.

I tried one of mine last week. Pop and pour and over 2 days. In short, there ain't nothing wrong with that bottle. Not as dense or extracted as I was expecting based on the vintage-more fruit and perfume than iron and pepper at this point. I could be convinced there was some cinnamon in the mix somewhere. Fine tannins. Very nice and I look forward to additional development over the next dozen plus years and more.

Mr. Alfert,

Thanks for the info. I'll see if I can find some 11's or 13's. Haven't had a chance to try Benetiere yet, so excited to do so! Just ordered some 2011 Chave (my first Chave and tried to pick an early approachable vintage). Have you tried one?
