I had a long day, and Fu pissed me off, so I popped a 2016 Gonon St Joe

#1 Post by Robert.A.Jr. » May 15th, 2019, 6:04 pm

So I got on the phone at 1:30 today for a series of conference calls, the last one lasting from 4-7:40 - multi-party with a foreign language translater, to negotiate a contract of several hundred pages. Fu texts me somewhere in the middle of that brutal call, pics of all his new deliveries of unicorn Rhones. Gets all bragadocious and shit, poops on Bordeaux, but admittedly, got me thinking of what I want to pop when I get off this daft call. Ok, it pays the bills and I love it, but please allow me to complain.

I walk into my messy office. Wine fridge loaded. 7-8 cases of wine laying around, no place to go, one of which is 2016 Gonon. I have yet to try the St Joe in this year, but the Iles Feray was fan-freakin-tastic. So I grab a Gonon. I don’t care if it is a baby. Actually, other than 2010, I cannot recall a Gonon that doesn’t taste great young, middle or old. This night is better now.

This 2016 does not disappoint on pop and pour. That signature note of iron, mineral-rich earth, brine and gamey fruits. The palate is teeth-staining, lip-smackingly good. Bright fruits, red and purple, with notable citrus acid. Savory, chalky, chewy. Still pretty tannic, but they are tangy-sweet. Delicious. An excellent Gonon. A big Gonon but a step back from 2015. Better than 2015, more balanced.

Yup, recognized the Campy corkscrew. I've got one too. Not as practical as the simple waiter's corkscrew, but it looks awesome!

Which would absolutely not surprise me based upon the Texas vs. Florida crazy thread. I imagine that a gun totin' construction lawyer threatening his ferin' negotiatin' adversaries with semi-auto whilst swigging a bit o' Gonon constitutes a routine Wednesday in Flo-ida.

Cue:

Of course, in Texas it would be full auto and DRC-RC.

Come on Greg, it’s only Wednesday! Thursday smells like Chave night.

Stand Your Ground Rules in FL! Texas is for chumps, except for K-John. But he drinks Cali.

In lieu of guns, however, I have Golden Retrievers.

Well, based upon some friends' Goldens, they would kill them with cuteness (and slobber).

I know what that’s like. While we can take such con calls from anywhere (thanks to technology), I prefer doing so with all the locally-based parties/reps physically present together (only those based/physically abroad on the speaker). For some reason, such conferences wind up more fruitful/efficient, and time seems to pass more quickly.

Gets a lot more difficult though when the other party(ies) are on US time. Europe time not as much.

Also, if my friends' Goldens are any indication -- they are wimps.

My 13 lb dachshund had them cowed.

Of course, my dachshund would attack, fangs bared, any man or beast -- including many that would have swallowed her whole without realizing they had swallowed anything.

Yea no complaints about having checked in early, it’s delicious. I saved 1/3 of the bottle for tonight. Will circle back.

And to Neal’s question, Neal, ask Fu why he wears stretchy pants.....

That I could do. I speak Southern and can translate it into 'merican.

Ending phone calls at 7:40 seems like an early night. I assume you worked for another couple of hours after the Gonon?

Ironically, this call had folks from Korea, DC, Florida and Georgia. It's the Georgia-speak that's tough!

This is why I will never qualify as a grimpeur:
Sports physiologists have attributed the advantage that small stature holds in cycling up steep ascents to the way in which body mass and body surface area scale according to height (see square-cube law). As a hypothetical cyclist’s height increases, the surface areas of his body increase according to the square of his height whereas the mass of his body increases according to the cube of his height. The surface area relation applies not only to the total surface area of the body, but also to the surface areas of the lungs and blood vessels, which are primary factors in determining aerobic power. Thus, an equally proportioned cyclist who has 50% more body mass (i.e. is 50% heavier) will generate only about 30% more aerobic power. On a steep climb most of the cyclist’s energy goes into lifting his own weight, so the heavier cyclist will be at a competitive disadvantage. There is, of course, a lower limit to the benefit of small stature because, among other factors, the cyclist must also lift the weight of his bicycle. The additional power is proportional to the grade or slope of the road and the speed of the rider along the slope (or along the level line). For a 5% grade, each meter of road requires lifting the body weight by 5 cm. The power (watts) is equal to change in gravitational potential energy (joules) per unit time (seconds). For a 60 kilograms (130 lb) rider, the additional power needed is about 30 watts per meter/second of road speed (about 8 watts per km/hour).
I go for the maillot vert, instead.

Like it in my wines as well.

So I got on the phone at 1:30 today for a series of conference calls, the last one lasting from 4-7:40 - multi-party with a foreign language translater, to negotiate a contract of several hundred pages.
How often do you need a translator for Florida English?
That I could do. I speak Southern and can translate it into 'merican.

How about Spanish

Thanks for the note though I agree with you that oftentimes babies are the most delicious!

I kind of regret following Fu on Instagram. Fu envy is real. It does appear that he is one of the best people to be friends with if you are an epicurean; too bad there's nothin' but cynics here!

I had a bad day, too.

Nobody was picking up on my social signalling, my wife's McLaren got a scratch that's gonna set me back 20 grand, other people who are not me needed attention, and my wine broker said my cases of 1945 First growth's wouldn't be here until Friday. Freaking Friday! I had half a mind to drive my Bugatti Veyron down to my personal terminal and hop on my Global 7500 and fly down and get them myself.

So, screw it, I opened my 21st to last bottle of 1959 DRC, flew Mick and the boys in for a personal barn concert and it cheered me up. [cheers.gif]

At our guest villa.

Keith goes through La Tache likes it's Hearty Burgundy. Talk about an expensive wino.

Luckily, I have a dedicated DRC cave.

He doesn't smoke when he's at our place, either. Respect.

Texas is for chumps, except for K-John. But he drinks Cali.

In lieu of guns, however, I have Golden Retrievers.
I would just like to say that I very much like this post even if I disagree that Texas is for chumps.

Ending phone calls at 7:40 seems like an early night. I assume you worked for another couple of hours after the Gonon?
Ironically, this call had folks from Korea, DC, Florida and Georgia. It's the Georgia-speak that's tough!
[winner.gif] [winner.gif] That is exactly my area of expertise. But, I am much more fluent in coastal Georgia than I am to the accent the "rubes" use in Central Georgia. [oops.gif]

I am still confused about getting back at Fu with a Rhone. Wouldn't it have been better to open a bottle of Krug????

Not to interrupt a wine thread with an actual wine comment, but it’s interesting how Alf’s bottle seemed to show more open than the one I had a couple of months about:

I have a feeling from reading Alan’s notes - and he has a killer palate - that I may be more tolerant of a young wine than him, so long as it is not a modern wine. Gonon is not that.

I doubt that this is an issue at all, but these cases sitting in my office have been there for 6 months at about 70 degrees. Not ideal, but short-term.

Funny enough, my co-lead partner is from South GA. I call him redneck, but he’s one cool MOFO and an absolute genius with a photographic memory. A truly gifted lawyer and a good man, honored to be friends. His Georgia sayings crack me up. I’ve been quietly writing them down for over ten years, so when he retires - he’s about 5 years older than me - I’m gonna roast him at the going away party. They definitely speak differently there.

He drinks Cali bombs but Islay Malts like me, so some Venn Diagram in play.
