TNs: Back vintage Edmunds St. John

Going through some more wines I purchase with Steve’s most recent cellar sale. Still in awe of how well his wines age.

1993 Edmunds St. John Zinfandel Amador County

I think we opened this bottle at the perfect time. Lovely perfume of raspberries, cherry liquor, plum, chocolate, cinnamon, and espresso on a layer of mint and herbs. The acidity on the palate is excellent and the concentration and depth of flavors is just right. Overall superb, would strongly recommend drinking up now.

1987 Edmunds St. John Les Cotes Sauvages

Had a bit of VA upfront on the nose that blew off. What Les Cotes Sauvages lost in its red fruit notes, which are starting to fade, it made up for in savory black pepper, liquorice, and well-maintained structure of the acidity and tannins. Some herbal notes on the finish, especially mint and eucalyptus. Overall delightful. I think this could still go another 5 years before starting to decline.

It has been a real treat to be able to open the back vintage wines from Steve.
