TN: Von Winning 2010 Kalkofen Riesling Grosses Gewachs

TN: Von Winning 2010 Kalkofen Riesling Grosses Gewachs - Surprisingly good, and aging rather well. Has taken on a nice, mature, more golden color. IIRC, these were a little controversial because of their use of barrels, but there’s nothing “oaky” about the wine.

Aromas of golden grahams, honey, apricot, nectarine and peach, with hints of ginger in the back. A full-bodied Riesling, but with more acidity than Alsace and less alcohol than Austria. Has the flamboyant tropical notes of the Pfalz, but also retains a fresh streak of chalk and acid even as the fruits turn more golden. Rich dry extract gives this excellent length.

Jim, a big fan of this producer. Subsequent vintages just build upon the previous. I am reluctant to sing praises as demand is going to pressure prices. Great young wine makers. A future superstar.

Yes, I visited them when we were in Deideisheim last summer; great wines!
