TN: 2016 Carlisle Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard

  • 2016 Carlisle Grüner Veltliner Steiner Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain (4/12/2019)
Pop and pour at the Bar Association HOD dinner, except that it was a screw cap. Outstanding wine with great balance, purity of fruit, no roughness, great depth. One of the people at the table had been to a recent tasting of a lot of Austrian GVs and she said this was better than any of them. She did not know anyone grew GV in California.

The palate is similar to a GG Riesling. Bone dry but the fruityness gives it just a tiny touch of apparent sweetness. White fruit with tart apple dominant and a bit of pear. Notably, it did not have the smooth white pepper from Austrian GV, which is such an obvious tell. Moderate but not laser sharp acidity that lightened up the very faint citrus component. (92 pts.)

Yup, Jay…I think Mike’s GV is about the best made in Calif. It doesn’t have a lot of the
minerality you get from Wachau GV, but I picked up a trace of the signature GV white pepper. Good stuff.
