What's your average spend per Champagne bottle in your collection?

#1 Post by Mark B » April 12th, 2019, 10:45 am

Sadly, Champagne makes up the smallest part of my cellar. Currently, I'm only sitting on four bottles. I used to have 3-4ish times that amount back when I was scoring cheap bottles on Winebid before they cut off their free local pickup. These days, I'm really only picking up bottles when I'm lucky enough to find them on closeout (just scored 2 2006 Deutz for $30 per). With retail prices on decent NVs starting well north of $30 per, I find my wine dollars stretch much further in other regions. All this got me thinking. As Champagne is almost always priced as a "luxury" product, how much on average are you paying for a bottle of Champers these days?

Mean. Total cost of all Champagnes, divided by total bottles. The "true" average cost.

Average is $60, but I definitely drink more in the $40-$50 range. The average is higher due to the presence of some splurge-type bottles in the mix. While the cost-of-entry in Champagne is higher than in many other regions, I still find it to be relatively good value on the whole (if you shop carefully).

The Champagne that I cellar and that's part of my "collection" is significantly more expensive than the bubbly I buy to drink in the short term.

I'm only newly serious to Champagne, and I've found that finding a house that makes Champagne (or sparkling wine) in a style I like is much more important than how much the bottle costs, and I'm still looking for bottles that I like enough to spend a lot of money on. That being said, I typically like vintage Champagne much more than NV and generally the NV I buy is consumed the same day/week and I'm much more likely to add vintage Champagne to my collection. I've been finding some vintage Champagne I love for about $80, so that's where the average of my Champagne collection lies. However, the majority of the sparkling wine I drink (as opposed to collect) is between $20 - $40 or so dollars, especially as it's not uncommon for me to enjoy a $25ish bottle of Cremant as much or more than entry level $40 NV Champagnes.

I'm currently in the 40-50 which is slightly skewed from a recent trip to Champagne where I brought home a case of wines that probably averaged $25/bottle purchased at the wineries.

Well over $100 a bottle, even considering a bunch of half bottles and a bunch I got as gifts (so zero cost). Its backfilling mature champagne. That's a killer.

I just haven't found the higher price of vintage champagne to be justified. I get enough enjoyment out of aged domestic sparklers like Domaine Carneros, Roederer L'Ermitage and even NV Rodederer Estate. Yeah, I'm the one vote (currently) in the $25-$39 bracket. Cheers!

You're not alone. I'm also right around $30 on average. Not splurging on the vintage stuff like I used to. More $ going towards white Burgs and Mosel Rieslings.

Average is probably 150-200 with ~4-500 bottles in stock. I’d like champagne to be about 25% of then cellar but not quite there yet.

$50, Charles Heidsieck NV, Pierre Peters, and Paul Bara are all great everyday champagnes in my opinion.

Ave. spend on bottles of sparkling wine currently *in* my cellar: $47.50
Ave. spend, historically, on sparkling wines: $32.50 (does not include bottles gifted to me)

Both of those numbers are reflective of my habit of generally buying sub-$20 sparklers for mimosas. If I were to keep this only to Champagne, specifically, the numbers would change drastically.

I tend to buy in the $40-60 range and also $120+ for longer term aging. Average is $115, but only 43 bottles so far (growing quickly, though :))

The average for my 47 bottles is almost exactly $100. This does not include the $20 bottles we buy for my wife to drink with her girlfriends. I have have just recently started buying vintage champagnes so I expect this average will creep up.

I buy a lot of daily drinkers which cost between $32-$40.

Then I go where I want for some special stuff, in the $100-150 range. Problem is, I look at them as I do my daily drinkers. And so it goes.

I like Champagne and find a lot of enjoyment in bottles under $50, very much where most of my wine purchases are. I have bought some spendy bottles, as I have with still wines, but that’s not my norm.

I’m pretty surprised at the poll results and wonder if $100 and up is the range for all wines among you whales.

I get answering anonymous polls like this, but I'm always surprised by the specificity in which people post about how many bottles they own and how much they cost.

Yeah, I wouldn't divulge specifics either.

Because it's personally embarrassing how much of my income I spend on Champagne. Basically, I wouldn't be out of place from Hogarth's A Rake's Progress.

Exactly. If for no other reason than the assumptions and judgment. It's telling that no one with truly a lot of expensive champagne would be that specific in their answers.

I’m really new to Champagne, and hitting it hard, so I’m in a learning process. I’m drinking a ton in the $30-$50 range and then I’m just barely touching the $125-$175 mark with the teeniest part of my pinky.

I get answering anonymous polls like this, but I'm always surprised by the specificity in which people post about how many bottles they own and how much they cost.
Exactly. If for no other reason than the assumptions and judgment. It's telling that no one with truly a lot of expensive champagne would be that specific in their answers.
Or people just don’t care what others think, even if it’s negative.

+$100 is a very huge range to be in. It could be $101. Could be $500. Knowing a bottle count means nothing.

Mean or median cost?
Mean. Total cost of all Champagnes, divided by total bottles. The "true" average cost.
Median is going to be a “truer” descriptive statistic if your distribution is skewed by a few bottles of Krug or Salon. Given the response her suggesting somewhat bimodal or skewed distributions, median isn’t a bad descriptive statistic.

Mean is the right statistic if you are asking about your average dollar spend on champagne. If two thirds of my collection is $20 bottles of Heidsick and the other third is $500 bottles of aged Krug, it would be wildly misleading to say that my average spend is $20, just because that happens to be the median bottle.
