Wine Shops in Frankfurt & Milan

Can anyone recommend a good wine shop or two in Frankfurt and/or Milan? I’m most interested in aged Riesling for Frankfurt and aged Barolo/Barbaresco for Milan, and don’t need trophies. (Burgundy also of course is good.) For the Riesling, I’m looking most for Spatlese, Kabinett & Auslese. Thank you for your help!

Cantine Isola in Milan. Cheap Raveneau, Dauvissat, Giuseppe Rinaldi etc.

Ilkkal,

Thanks much. Looks great.

Please keep the recommendations coming!

Thanks

Been coming since 1991 (in Veneto now), about 4-5 months each year, with current favorites:

Enoteche a Milano: HIC ENOTECHE (Spallanzani), CANTINE ISOLA, VINOIR, N’OMBRA DE VIN, BICERIN, PECK

Tim - Excellent, thank you! I will look them up. I’m familiar with Peck, but not the rest.

Please keep any recommendations coming! Frankfurt, anyone?

Thanks

Hey theocorrel,

I think I know the right shop for you if you’re looking into aged Riesling and aged wines in general:
Visit the 7 Hats Wine Company, Grosse Seestrasse 57, 60486 Frankfurt.
The owner is Jürgen Wiegand and he’s a got a rather extensive collection of what you’re looking for.
Best you call him or email. I can send you his contacts if you’re interested.

Hope that helps.
Best, Krystian

Excellent Krystian! Thanks much (& for the message with contact info). I will try and stop by!

Hi Tim, we will be in Verona/Milan in July so this is very helpful. Any wine shop recs for Verona?

thnx Brodie

Ciao, Brodie
enoteca Dal Zovo Oreste, if you prefer the convenience of centro, is probably your best bet.

Leaving Verona tomorrow, 12th, and probably final VinItaly for me. Happy hunting to you.

Also, check out La Piazzetta if looking for a new resto.

Cantine Isola: days in which you could have all the greats at release price have LONG gone, you could find the occasional gem. That said it is my fav wine bar/enoteca with the most ecletic selection from Italy and outside Italy. If you are used to UK wine shops (Lea and Sandeman comes to mind) and add italian charm plus rustic overlay this is it. Sadly v well known to the hipster crowd. Go here for Barolo/Barbaresco.

Peck: very pricey with a decent selection. Sometimes they misprice great/old Burgundy/Bordeaux as Italy is well behind the curve. The food section is more interesting. It is what Harrods Food Halls aspire to be when they grow up.

N’Ombra De Vin: pricey but you can find the whole of Jamet selection (ALL THE WINES) on the shelf. Or Gut Oggau. The price are on the expensive side but you get to watch the “beautiful” crowd of Milan for aperitivo and late night drinks. Gets pretty wild sometimes around 11pm/12am during the week. As far as Italian wines they probably have the widest selection in town along with the former Enoteca Ronchi. Excellent Champagne selection (also priced accordingly). Go here for Barolo/Barbaresco.

Vinoir: deals too much in Natural Wines. Sorry not my kind of thing.

Insider tip: former Somm at N’Ombra just opened a fab restaurant called Nebbia (food in Milan is as expensive as London when you dine out, just check the article on the FT this week, and of very average quality/little variety) which I wholeheartedly recommend.

Visited N’Ombra de Vin, Enoteca Ronchi and Peck…probably a decade ago. Cool shops. Sorry to hear that Enoteca Ronchi is no more? That was my favorite of the three.

My wife might be headed to Milan on business in a few weeks so thanks for the suggestions.

Pierfrancesco - Outstanding. Thank you much! You (or anyone) don’t happen to know a wineshop/cantine in Como, do you? Thanks again. Theo

The town itself or the lake? If the latter then Cava Turacciolo in Bellagio is worth visiting.

Unfortunately, I don’t.

Re Milan I know what I know in the sense I have been living here only for 2 years after a long stint in the UK (my home country). Because of work, I rarely venture out and keeping UK habits I buy mostly online/mail order.

Enoteca Ronchi has rebranded and I haven’t been since. The selection of the few other enoteche (Iemmallo or Ricerca Vini) is pretty depressing in terms of variety with non-Italian wines rarely seen and New World zeroed out…

Uh forgot to mention Champagne Socialist opened recently. Never been but could not be that bad (despite the area). A bit hipsterish selection but I would give it a try…

Gentlemen, thank you! I will be checking them out.

Ilkkal - Como is on the lake, but I also wiill be in Bellagio & Ravenna - thanks!

Another recommendation for 7 hats wine company. Stopped by to grab a few bottles to fly home with, unfortunately most of his aged stuff is offsite. Grabbed a few bottles the owner recommended. Didn’t really have any older Rieslings in the store, but he ended up giving me a 1972 Scheurebe for free as I was waiting for my uber back to hotel. Said next time contact him ahead of time for the stuff offsite.

Cool Climate is for me the most interesting shop in Frankfurt.

For Milano ‘Call me wine’ were brilliant for online ordering until they converted to national rather than international shipping. Not sure if they have a bricks and mortar shop.
