"Steak" wine for party around $30 bottle

#1 Post by Justin S » March 28th, 2019, 11:51 am

Got a family reunion coming up next month and am responsible for buying about a half case of red wine for a steak dinner (ribeyes, skirt steaks). Budget is around $30 / bottle, any suggestions?

Stylistically, I really like Mount Eden cab, but that is over budget. I've also liked the '08 La Rioja Alta Vina Ardanza in the $30 range, just wish it had a bit less oak. Looking for good acidity, good fruit, and present but not harsh tannin. The every day drinking Italian sangiovese based wines in my cellar seem a bit rustic and/or devoid of fruit to be crowd pleasing.

Thanks all.

Bogle. Much cheaper but very drinkable, robust reds.

If you had posted earlier, two cases of this WineHunter Special were available: https://www.winebid.com/BuyWine/Item/69 ... -Sauvignon

This is an easy one. Contact Calluna Vineyards and pick up 6 bottles of the 2015 Calluna Vineyards Cuvée (CVC). The 2015 is the current release and is excellent. 51% Merlot, 19% Cabernet, 15% Cabernet Franc, 8% Malbec, 7% Petit Verdot. A Bordeaux blend that is perfect with a steak.

You may find it locally or through the web, if not contact Calluna directly.

A couple easy to find, but young ones, if you like napa cabernet- 2016 Girard, Beringer KV, Mobdavi napa ( or the 2015). Have tried all, pretty good for the price and with steak, and for the unknowing.

North Coast Cab has been on a roll since 2011. Should be fairly easy to get a good cab from one of these good years for $30 or less. Took for entry level Cads from Sebastini, Louis Martini, Mondavi, Beringer or Kendall Jackson. Check out CT notes or critic reviews.

Good luck with the family reunion.

Lots of aged Australia reds in the marketplace, the aftermath of the Parker ooze-monster, feeding-frenzy, point-chasing bubble fifteen years ago.

A handful of ideas that come to mind that are readily available at retail:
Carpineto Vino Nobile Riserva 2013
Felsina Berardegna Chianti Classico Riserva 2015
Lopez de la Heredia Viña Cubillo 2009
Chateau Moulin de Tricot Haut Medoc 2014

The Robert Mondavi Napa is under $20 a bottle in these parts (Costco) and is very, very good at the $30 threshold. Lots of estate fruit in the cuvee and possibly some declassified To-Kalon may have made it in.

Plus, wherever you find it, that outlet should have cases of it.
It's not easy being drunk all the time. Everyone would be doing it if it were easy.

Agreed. I have been buying these recently for around $30 each. Much better than the new vintages.

I’d just open 15 or 16 bastide miraflores and save $17/btl.

Based on your like of Mount Eden I'd say Freemark Abbey. It's above $30 but occasionally I can find a sale and a coupon that will get me into the $30 range.

There is discussion in another thread but The Paring has been a great choice for us for larger dinners with beef. It’s right at $30 before tax.

My first thought too, but there is the oak situation. You should be able to get the entry Ridge Zin (3 valleys?) for that price and perhaps one of the single vineyard jobs for not much more. Should be a fan favorite at a fam dinner. I'd go for the rioja if it were up to me though

Marietta, Arme-Cabernet Sauvignon blend.

A bold, pungent wine, the 2014 Armé offers a decidedly old school influenced profile of dark stone fruit, black olive, herb, tobacco and licorice. Cool and savory, but with considerable depth, the 2014 Armé is another knock out wine from Scot Bilbro. Generous dollops of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Malbec round out this dark, fleshy red. Readers looking for a value priced California Cabernet will flip out over this wine. This is a very serious wine for the money. Last tasted, 4/17. Rating, 92.

Steak? Malbec usually works well. Tapiz Alta Malbec has been recommended more than once here, I think it is about $20. Plenty of others - I like the trusted local wine shop suggestion.

The Calluna recommendation is a solid one. I’d also look for Hobo’s Cabernet or one of their Zins.

Gibbs Napa Valley Cabernet, $32 a bottle. The wine is somewhat retro. Low ABV. Not as viscous and sweet as most recent Cabs and will accentuate the meat.
Educated Guess, $22 a bottle. Big wine at little cost and readily available. Will appeal to a wide variety of people and take on the meat head to head, plus, real confident in the winemaker's ability.

Domaine Eden cabernet sells for $30-40 a bottle on WSPro. That's a good option, especially since the OP likes Mount Eden. Domaine Eden wines really overperform their price point, I think.

I respectfully disagree with the Calluna choice. Those are really tight, lean wines. With age and aeration, probably good to many here on WB, but definitely not what I'd serve to a big group of civilians.

Achaval Ferrer Quimera (blend of cab, malbec, probably bits of other BDX varieties) is a great drinker at around $25. Bold purple fruit, graphite, high acid.

Bordeaux in this price range is far too ignored and can provide tremendous value. I have seen Chateau Potensac selling for around this price and there are many others. Will depend on what your local merchant sells.

I’d just open 15 or 16 bastide miraflores and save $17/btl.
This is an excellent recommendation. I got a good offer on the 2015 18 months ago and offered it to my staff. About 8 people wanted it, I got a few cases, and they all loved it. It is a well made wine with complexity and fruit so it seems sweet (it's not) and is a real crowd pleaser. This is Jeb Dunnock's review, which I pasted into the email to staff:

"This wine is almost too good to be true. A blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache that was brought up in concrete tanks (Grenache) and demi-muids (Syrah), the 2015 Bastide Miraflors Vieilles Vignes reminded me of a mini Syrah from California's Manfred Krankl (yes I just compared a $14 Syrah to Sine Qua Non). It's a ripe, sexy, heady beauty that exhibits a deep, purple color as well as killer notes of smoked meats, chocolate, blackberry and black raspberries. Deep, unctuous, open knit and layered, it continues to change in the glass, has a seamless and silky profile, and not a hard edge to be found. It's a sensational value that needs to be tasted to be believed. Drink it anytime over the coming 2-4 years."-Jeb Dunnuck

I’ve tried to order this thru my go to local retailer and the distributor doesn’t have any. They said they have a GSM from Lafage. Looking at CT I can’t figure out which one it is. Any ideas?

I should’ve pulled the trigger on these when Full Pull offered them back in October/November.

2015 Fonterutoli CC. It's on the richer/bolder end of the CC spectrum, so it will also work for the domestic Cabernet fans.

This is not my experience. Granted my dataset consists of one group of 5 civilians that I introduced 2.5 years ago. They all love Calluna and especially the CVC given the QPR. All of them continue to buy regularly from Calluna now that they have tried it. Yet, it hasn’t really changed their approach to wine. still largely drink supermarket wine.

Also has been my experience. Unrelated but interesting, Calluna is one of those rare US wines that Gilman, Parker and Galloni all rave about. Not many wines can claim that :)

I’ve tried to order this thru my go to local retailer and the distributor doesn’t have any. They said they have a GSM from Lafage. Looking at CT I can’t figure out which one it is. Any ideas?

I should’ve pulled the trigger on these when Full Pull offered them back in October/November.
It is probably the Tessellae Old Vines: https://www.cellartracker.com/w?2658658

I just had this on Monday and thought it was nice and a good QPR, but not quite the QPR of the bastide miraflors. I did not get a chance to give it air which seems to help based on the CT notes.

Bordeaux in this price range is far too ignored and can provide tremendous value. I have seen Chateau Potensac selling for around this price and there are many others. Will depend on what your local merchant sells.
+1

And Lanessan
And Poujeaux
And Cantemerle
And Chasse Spleen
And Sociando Mallet
