TN: 1999 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds

  • 1999 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru (3/16/2019)
Medium ruby color. Nose of deep earth, iodine, black cherry, violets. Sweet on the palate with layers of red cherry, strawberry, plum, and caramel overlying a foundation of granite and iron filings. Bright acidity and firm, linear tannins, leading to long finish of authoritative stone and red mulberry fruit. A wine of intensity and ethereal lightness amidst rock and iron. (92 pts.)

This sounds like it’s starting to drink! True? Or do firm, linear tannins mean it’s best left alone?

I had the same questions.

Jayson and John,

It is beginning to open in my humble opinion. However if you just have a few, would wait.

You guys know better than me, but my understanding is that this is the first vintage orchestrated by Etienne, with Hubert looking right over his shoulder.

Cheers,
Doug
