How much Wine do we drink a year?

#1 Post by Brian R Bachman » January 22nd, 2019, 10:52 am

We drink, party or gift about 360 bottles a year. Gifts are "hostess" gifts when we go to a dinner party. What do others go through?

We seldom go out for dinner without taking a bottle (well, except Mexican food)

Except for stickies, my SO doesn’t enjoy wine. I drink about a bottle and half a week. Looking back on notes and receipts, I opened 88 last year.

80-90 bottles a year from my own cellar for dinners with my SO, parties at my home, or family get togethers. I don't consistently log wine purchased at restaurants or tasted at a friend's home. For health reasons, I try not to open more than one bottle a week, so the rest comes from sharing with others.

My wife an I drink about 2 bottles per week home together. About 100 total.

We probably go through another 100 entertaining.

About 36 for Thanksgiving week at the in-laws.

Probably 24-36 for when we go to people's houses.

Maybe 24 as gifts.

Call it 300 per year?

I probably pour down my own gullet about 75 bottles worth per year, 56 liters.

Average, say 15% ABV for wine...8 liters of alcohol.

That's about 264 ounces of alcohol per year, averages to .75 ounces per day of ethanol...which is, what, about a drink and half? Sounds high to me.

A follow on comment... we seldom drink beer or hard drinks. Wine is pretty much it for alcohol...

CT averages over the last 13 years:

Drink 219/year
Gift 25/year
Contribute to a tasting 9/year
Sell 64/year (this number is going up a lot)

I am probably in the same ballpark for personal consumption. Look at your numbers this way: you average a single "standard" 5 ounce glass of wine per day. By some studies, we would be considered exemplary in our wine consumption. Yeah, exemplary!

Not sure how much wine "we drink". Typically purchase and consume (me, wife, friends, party guests): 280 - 320 bottles year. We probably serve a little more wine than we drink from others, but it's close.

I go through a lot during the summer out at the beach. Probably 10-15 cases. Slower during the rest of the year, maybe 3ish bottles a week regularly then dinner parties and holidays churn some cases. I have no idea what that adds up to. Couple hundred bottles?

~180-200/year in recent years (which is "consumed" per cellartracker figures - so a few are gifts). A decent amount of that is bringing wine to others' dinners, and it doesn't include most restaurant purchases.

The problem is that I buy well more than that each year . . .

My wife and I have a half bottle most every night for dinner. Those plus some gifted and some taken to our wine club tastings and we're right at 200, give or take a handful.

About 350 bottles a year from our own cellar, including parties and wine dinners. We don't buy off restaurant lists all that often except when we're traveling. There are some cocktails and scotch as well, and my husband drinks beer occasionally though I do not.

I personally drink about 250 bottles a year. This includes in the total:
Opened and consumed at home (often over several days; often as single glasses of two or more different wines)
Consumed at professional tastings, after the professional part is over
At homes of friends and associates (sometimes wines I bring, sometimes wines they provide)
At restaurants
Sally now probably drinks less than 50 bottles a year.
We open at home for other people about 50 - 75 bottles a year. This number would increase if more people, Berserkers included, came to Maine.
We gift at least 150 bottles a year.
I donate about 150 bottles a year. This is separate from wine donations made by my business, which is a much larger number.

142 consumed from the cellar in 2018, add in a few from restaurant purchases, parties elsewhere and group dinners, probably about 160.

CellarTracker shows about 300 per year average consumed from our cellar. Add another 50 or so purchased at restaurants or while traveling. Since we consume a bottle a night, that would make sense but it doesn't account for the "dry January" we've been doing for over 20 years.

Lots.

But way too modest to count.

At least one more bottle than Neal.

For the last couple of years, we have averaged about 200 bottles a year consumed at home, either just my wife and I or when hosting parties. Of that usually 3-4 cases is consumed by family and friends visiting us around Thanksgiving.

200 bottles is about a ~35% reduction from prior years. Part of that was a stated goal to drink less (but better!), which we have achieved, part of that is that we discovered bourbon.

It doesn’t count wine consumed outside our house. But we don’t drink that much wine in restaurants/bars or at the houses of our friends/family.

420 last year that I recorded at home. Doesn't include anything we had outside of the house, either from the cellar or purchased, or anything with other people at dinners, restaurants, etc. That would add quite a few more. Also doesn't include tastings - these are just bottles we had at home.

But you figure that white wine doesn't really count, so it's not that much all considered.

True. In the words of Ron Swanson, “clear alcohols are for ladies”.

Still young in my journey, but my consumption over the last 5 years seems to have leveled off around 200 bottles/year. Not including group tastings, dinners out (I deeply wish the laws were more lenient here). Also enjoy a cocktail periodically, an occasional dry lent or January. I shudder to think of applying Anton’s math to my own habits...

Apparently 276 bottles, not counting about 6 wine trips with LOTs of tastings.

Between my wife and I about 150 out of my cellar.

Quiet happy with that number. It pays off to keep your hands of the bottles during weekdays.

First time I've run this # from CT and was a little surprised that it was just over 300 bottles. That involves a lot taken to dinner parties, etc. Maybe the most surprising thing was that there were 16 bottles that went missing in that period! Maybe I need to cut down on the consumed bottles and focus more on those sneaky bottles that are going missing! [cheers.gif]

Since I started keeping track about 30 years ago, about 150 bottles per year from my cellar, not including restaurant purchases which are not common. It was more like 200 per year the first 5-10 years. Recently it’s more like 80 per year.

My wife and I will typically open a bottle a week and drink about 2/3 one day, then finish it the next. Some weeks we go through 2 bottles, plus tastings and dinner parties. Used to be a lot more tastings. We also used to serve more wine at our dinner parties. Our gang has all shifted towards drinking less as we've aged.

We take about 350 per year from inventory. These are normally the bottle that we share with dinner. My wife probably drinks an additional 50 with her girlfriends which were never entered into inventory.

We hover around 100 a year out of the cellar, or two a week. This doesn’t include restaurants, other people’s wine, or parties.

I feel like we have some catching up to do based on the numbers I’m seeing higher up in the thread!

My favorite post so far is "NFI".

Posting so far, with some interpretation...

Less than 2 per week...2
2-3 per week... 6
3-5 per week ...8
6-7 per week...14
More...............4

I made a goal some years back to drink better. Somehow it has not reduced my consumption, but I find I have a lot more friends!

Roughly 150 per year for 2017 and 2018, a little higher for a few years before that, lower years before that.
