Really Good Wines

Had some really good wines over a long weekend down in Hobart.

2006 Jacques Selosse Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Millésimé: Complex aromatics of baked apple, bread, chalk and ripe peach. It is full, fluffy and generous in the mouth, with layers of orchard fruit, mineral and cream. It has outstanding depth and a really chalky finish. Length is impressive.

2007 Arnaud Ente Meursault La Seve du Clos: Incredibly youthful, with loads of citrus and mineral. There’s a whiff of toast and some almond butter too. It is really rocky, with a cool fruit profile, great line and fabulous cut. It is right where you’d love every bottle of '07 to be right now.

2011 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Baudines: Very pure wine with ripe orchard fruit aromas and flavours that are tinged with spice. It has plenty of mineral and excellent focus, with all flavours possessing outstanding clarity. The finish is loaded with chalky dry extract.
2013 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Cuvée Haute Densité: Incredibly tight and youthful but brilliant none the less. has intense citrus fruit and a touch of spice. It is shaped like Chevalier and finishes with outstanding cut. A stony coolness envelops the palate once the wine is swallowed.

2013 Domaine Jacques Carillon Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: So fine, elegant and complex. Smells of flint, pure white peach and honeysuckle. It has great rocky detail in the mouth. The fruit flavours are precise and it is unctuous of feel. It is a powerful wine but one that slowly builds in the mouth, coming to a minerally crescendo, then driving on and on. Simply brilliant white Burgundy.

2015 Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières: A beautiful nose of ripe peach and melon, hazelnut cream, flint and spice. It is dense and compact in the mouth, with a brilliant line of minerally acidity and great texture. It finishes with chalky cut and has superb drive and length. Still extremely youthful.

2015 Domaine Thomas Morey Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: It is expressive with plenty of sappy orchard fruits and spice. It is full and powerful in the mouth and has the sun-kissed quality of the vintage but is also a very fresh, bright and energetic wine. It has outstanding length.

2016 Domaine Thomas Morey Bâtard-Montrachet, Grand Cru: Really deep, dense and concentrated. The nose is a little shy, emitting a bare whiff of white peach and white flowers. The palate is explosive. Sappy orchard fruits envelop the mouth. It has layers of flavour and a strong mineral backbone. It builds through the palate and finishes with great cut. Needs plenty of time.

2009 Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques: Starts off all dark and surly with plenty of meat, iron, leather and earth. It sweetness in the glass and has a core of black cherry. There’s good flesh and excellent savoury nuance. It has good length and sinewy muscle. Good now, better in a decade.

2010 Faiveley Grands-Echezeaux, Grand Cru: Fairly tight and unyielding at first. Opens up with air to show some Asian spice, Hoisin and red and black fruits. It is dense and sappy in the mouth and has chewy tannins. There is some enjoyment to be had now but it really needs a decade in the cellar.

2014 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Corton Prince Florent de Merode: All DRC up front with engaging notes of rose petal, Hoisin and sandalwood. It has a core of pristine red and black fruits. It is so vibrant, with outstanding detail and balance and a gentle flex of muscle to the back-end.

2015 Château d’Yquem: Young Yquem that is generous, delicious and beautifully balanced. There are aromas of coconut ice, apricot, honey, lavender and citrus. It is full and sweet, with outstanding volume and a finish that crackles with energy. Length is superb.

any teeth left? Wow!

Teeth are sore. Liver is sore.

Great list of wines, especially the whites. Thanks for the notes, but I’m jealous.

Thanks Jerry. Happy New Year to you.

Superb line up! … and reassuring for PYCM as some reports have indicated the 2015 were not up to scratch… maybe bottle variation?.. Will follow general advice and wait for maturity

I thought PYCM said that his '15’s were better (going to be better) than his '14’s??

I hope that all of the wines I drink aren’t up to scratch like the '15 PYCM’s. Who said they weren’t Antoine?
