TN: 2017 Bedrock Wine Co. Riesling Zweiter Zweieiiger Zwilling

2017 Bedrock Wine Co. Riesling Zweiter Zweieiiger Zwilling - USA, California, North Coast, Cole Ranch (1/10/2019)
I go into any tasting of American Riesling with a healthy dose of skepticism. This bottle turned that right on its head. From the first sip this was top notch. I spent a couple of hours casting around in my brain for comparisons, but nothing made the perfect fit. The weight of the Bedrock is greater than most German Rieslings, so perhaps leaning towards modern Alsace. The balance of sweetness and acidity had me in the mind of a modern Rhine Kabinett, on the high end of what most producers bottle as Feinherb. The fruit was more Californian. It tended to ripe tree fruit (pear, ripe apple), with only a light overlay of citrus. I would have preferred a touch more acidity, but there was no qualitative issue with the balance.

Putting aside the molecule by molecule breakdown of the wine, I thought it was a very fine Riesling, and I kept having to refill my glass. It was fun to drink!

Wow! Tremendous praise coming from you, David. I buy the various Bedrock rieslings and have enjoyed previous bottlings. Looking forward to trying this one!

Thanks for the tasting note!!

I have one bottle of the most recent vintage of Bedrock’sWirz” Riesling, but passed up on the “Cole Ranch” Rieslings.

I have seen nothing but positive comments on the “Mendo brothers”.

Drew, I can tell you that the Desire Lines '16 Cole Ranch Riesling was also outstanding.

Passing up on the Desire Lines offering was my biggest mistake of 2018.

But they didn’t offer a Riesling in the 2018 release so only a minor mistake.

I emailed the winery and they said that their next release is planned for the Fall of 2019. I have no details about what will be offered, aside from a CoCo red blend (Carignan/Mourvèdre) from the “Evangelho Vineyard”.
