TNs: 2002 Pascal Doquet VV BdB Le Mesnil, 1996 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Clos des Mouches

Couple of nice wines while watching bowl games and eating Island Creek Oysters while up in CT with the fam.

  • 2002 Pascal Doquet Champagne Grand Cru Vieilles Vignes Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil - France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru (1/2/2019)
Superb showing. Rich and powerful but balanced with fresh, wiry acidity. Notes of brioche, and buttered toast, some almond and white fruit. Really expressive on the palate and enough cut to be great with our island creek oysters, yet also tasty on its own.
  • 1996 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru (1/2/2019)
Clearly some bottle variation, as their are some not so nice notes immediately before mine. We opened and aired out for 20 mins. Nose shows some of that teritary/secondary aromas that come with age, and this smells like Beaune all day. Iron and leaves, very earthy and tea spice. The palate is still rather youthful, there’s a sweet, almost sappy fruit to the dark cherry flavors. Very long on the back end. Acid is not as present as might be expected from '96. Good drink. I’d put it just above the '02 from last week. Entering a prime zone, it seems.
