NYE Dinner Wine Choice Help

I’m planning on breaking out something really nice for New Year’s Eve. We’re having lamb (prepared with dijon/rosemary/olive oil, then grilled) and roasted potatoes. I’d love to go old world, and special occasion wines I have in the cellar that could match the food include 2004 Vega Sicilia Unico; 2008 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste; and 2011 or 2012 Chave Hermitage. My gut on all four is that they all could use more time, but was wondering if anyone had any recent experience with them being approachable. If none of these are ready, I can always go with 2004 Monte Bello, which I’ve had recently and was delicious. Thanks in advance for any help.

The 2008 Rinaldi in March was outstanding, though it will likely continue to be for many years to come. I haven’t had the 2004 Unico, but I’ve had the 1998, 2000, and 2006 within the past few months or so and wouldn’t hesitate to drink any of them now. I haven’t had the 2012 Chave, but the 2011 earlier this year was merely good and needs more time.

If your guests are likely to be more appreciative of subtlety, I’d open the Rinaldi. If they are more likely to prefer more exuberance, I’d pick the Unico.

Thanks Mike. Guests are me and my wife (and my non-drinking kids). Sounds like the Unico might be the call. We like subtlety just fine, but I think the New Year calls for exuberance! I’m looking forward to it, never had Unico.
