TN: 2005 Giovanni Rosso Barbera d'Alba Donna Margherita

  • 2005 Giovanni Rosso Barbera d’Alba Donna Margherita - Italy, Piedmont, Alba, Barbera d’Alba (12/29/2018)
This was part of the massive Zachy’s $5 inventory dump back in 2008. For years it was the house red along with Borsao, but I saved a couple to see how they aged. 30 minute decant. The low tanins characteristic of the grape were obvious, but I did not get the high acidity. Smooth with no rough edges. A good version of “just wine.” Nothing very special but no negative characteristics. There’s another glass left in the decanter and I’m going to see what it’s like with 5 hours of air and report back. (87 pts.)

From a similar $5 Zachys blow out sale of the same era, a 2003 Giovanni Rosso Barolo that I opened a couple of months ago was prune juice. But, the 04 G. Rossi Barolos are great.
