This video was made for Berserkers. There are so many great quotes to lampoon, I don’t even know where to begin. But I will… “I don’t even mind trying white and red at the same time”. [head exploding]

OMG! He does poke a little fun at himself. I think the understatement of the decade is when he says he can even teach us how to be pretentious if we want!

OMG I love it!

Is it me, or does he look like a slightly chubbier Steve Martin?

I say this as someone who has banned anyone from mentioning his scores to me when presenting a wine...that was actually a pretty decent promo video.

Between this and the video outside the fast food restaurant in France (and the epic "there's no perfect wine/I'm 100 points on that" video), I'm beginning to respect him as performance art.

He realized that with Gary V sidelined, the field was open for video tasting. He's pretty consistent and just like Gary V apparently got a few people into wine, he's doing the same thing.

As for performance art, I'm not sure that's entirely wrong. But he has his schtick and it's working.

Fun video.

Can't wait for the rest.

I think anything that helps people who are intimidated by the world of wine become less so, allowing them to increase their knowledge and enjoyment of what can be a wonderful hobby/experience, is a fantastic thing. That said.....

Maybe I'll get lambasted for this but I actually think it looks good - it will be quite helpful to the hopeful wine geek crowd.

Agreed Todd. We are not the target audience for this. Someone who is maybe very new to wine, or into wine from the “lifestyle” sense, I think that’s the audience. Again I think anything that helps expand appreciation of our little world is a good thing!

Unless of course Suckling leads them down a path of only liking spoofilates wines. But even then it just means less competition for my stinky Chinons!

Said differently... I think there is a level of intimidation at the perceived knowledge barrier that one must overcome to know and appreciate wine. How many of you started out with either decent working knowledge of wine, or someone who could help shepherd you through the learning process?

I didn’t have any family or friends who liked wine, and pre-internet didn’t know where to go to learn. Inevitably I’d stumble through the wine aisle of a grocery/liquor store and randomly grab something. I didn’t know how to select a wine or why it was even important.

The thing that struck me about the promo is how Suckling projected confidence without being completely over the top. If I am someone with a casual interest in wine who wants to learn more but is nervous about how to do so, I find that confidence incredibly comforting.

Of course most of us recognize that even our relatively deep experience barely fills a thimble in the vast universe of wine knowledge. But at least for me once I got to a place where I was no longer nervous about wine, because I had a framework for understanding it, I found the vastness of the whole thing liberating and exhilarating.

If even a handful of people come out of his class feeling the same way, then that’s a pretty cool result.

Oh, totally true. What brought me to the cackling stage is just how Suckling has essentially made his career on being a bit stuck up and pretentious that could/would make it more intimidating for the beginner. Now, he's trying the opposite approach and it just seems sooooooo disingenuous.

I met him briefly at one of his Top 100 Italian wine tastings and told him that I was relatively new to wine. His said that I should keep tasting as many wines as possible to develop my own palate and preferences. Apparently, for people under age 26 were less expensive as well.

In any case, he seems to have decent business savy, from his walkabout tastings, Lalique glass, and now video content.

It's funny but I got the distinct impression from this video that part of his goal was to give people the tools to be a stuck up, pretentious snot like he is. Knowing him better than the average person who will watch that, that promo clip walks a fine line between self parody and slick marketing.

Ok the first 40 seconds is parody'ish...a bit of a clown show...teetering on that 'do laugh at or with line'(more of the 'at' most def.)...but after the 40 seconds its fairly well done and would be somewhat intriguing if your more of a beginner to intermediate level...I can see how this could attract many.

I suspect MC approached Suckling and he would be foolish not to have agreed. Not sure how much he was paid but the model is usually $100K plus a percentage of sales. It’s heavily funded and I think they want to create a Netflix model for self education. $90 a specific class is not that appealing but a $180 a year unlimited membership is not too unreasonable for people seeking self education formats. To be amongst Steve Martin, Sorkin, Leibovitz and Ramsey, is great personal branding for Suckling. I probably would purchase the class but if I had a membership I surely would watch.

This is still one of my fav Suckling videos
I am starting to agree with everyone that says this is some sort of long play performance art piece by Suckling that just happens to allow him to live in Tuscany, drink great wine, and just enjoy life. I say golf clap sir, gold clap...

I wouldn't pay for any of their offered classes, as I'm already well above their league in all areas offered.

Steph Curry is hoping you'll join him on the Warriors as soon as your duo performance with Carlos Sanata is over. [cheers.gif]

Thanks for not understanding my sense of humour. Or perhaps you did? My point is that I would be surprised to see all other world famous people involved in Masterclass getting bashed on forums involving music, film making, cooking, etc.

I meant it purely as humor and friendly banter. I was 'being hyperbole' and simply enjoying your commentary.

I was picturing people sitting around saying things like, "Steph Curry, he's not so great, what does he know? Ray Allen is who they should have gotten." (US NBA joke.)

Or, someone sitting in his apartment saying, "Carlos Santana, he thinks he's so great. I bet he lives in Tuscany."

I was not trying to be disagreeable and apologies if our senses of humor did not obviously connect. [cheers.gif]

Suckling does strike me as bringing a lot of this on himself, though, I must admit.

I was actually guessing our senses of humor did connect. Irony in writing is always tricky:) Cheers.

I love the word Master Class. Sounds important. A local wine educator uses that term and pours crap but has plenty of maps and mediocre handouts to pretend it is a master class.

I signed up for the all access pass to get Aaron Franklin's segment. I decided to watch a few minutes of Suckling doing a blind tasting. "This wine isn't very good. I wouldn't finish the glass. 87 points."

I knew he inflated his grades but won't finish my glass is more of a 75-80 for me. 87 for not good wine is insane.

I had forgotten about this until I saw it in my FB feed this morning. Honestly, I think you have to respect his ability to capitalize on the wine gigg without relying so much on the newsletter/subscription site schtick. He's the William Shatner of wine, and I mean that as an accolade.

I would be able to watch a couple of minutes before going back to watch train videos.
