TN: 2013 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny

  • 2013 Clos Rougeard (Foucault) Saumur-Champigny - France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur-Champigny (12/10/2018)
Expressive and accessible young wine. Decanted. Very much identifiable on the nose as cab franc. Green pepper and faint reduction initially but time in the decanter evolved into floral perfume and more muted vegetal notes. Spice, dark fruit and chewy tannins. The fruit structure and acidity reminded me of good red Burgundy. Needs to time to express its potential.

Was reorganizing a bit over the weekend, and saw my 2012s. I quickly buried them to eliminate temptation.

I lost my Rougeard allocation after a handful of years, guess I was country folk compared to other heavy hitters, but candidly, would not have wanted to pay the fare for the 2013 Loire vintage. Now 2014 and 2015, I’d do naughty things!
