HDH 15% Off

#1 Post by Bret D!sk!n » November 22nd, 2018, 8:32 pm

FYI everyone - everything on HDH’s website is 15% off from now until Monday afternoon. Discount shows on the prices when you are browsing. Appears to include futures orders too. Some good deals with the discount! champagne.gif

Just bought a mixed case of Marguet with another Berserker. The discount makes the pricing as good as Envoyer in some cases, and even lower on a few others. The 12 Grand Ruelle for $63 is sick. I had a bottle of it yesterday that was terrific. Then $33 for the 13 Shaman? $33? Excellent prices.
My best wines of 2018:
2013 Vilmart & Cie Champagne Premier Cru Grand Cellier d'Or
2015 Kutch Sonoma Coast PN
2017 Kutch Falstaff Sonoma Coast PN
2012 Marguet Père et Fils Champagne La Grande Ruelle Ambonnay
2012 Savart Expression Nature Ecueil
2010 Tercero Verbiage (Rouge) Santa Barbara County

2 x '13 Allemand Chaillot
2 x '12 Marguet Ruelle
2 x NV Marguet Shaman 13

I've not been a huge Champagne fan, but really enjoyed both bottles of the Marguet Shaman 12 I had last year. Both of those were in the mid-$50's I think, so $33 for the 13 is a no brainer. Also took a safe flyer on the Ruelle based on FMIII's notes.

Cheers! champagne.gif

Hart Davis Hart in Chicago. They had their annual sale this week.

I blame Nordhoff for my purchases, as he alerted me to it but appreciate him finding me that Marguet at those prices.

Investigate shipping prices before you buy. In my experience, they are the highest among the stores I would otherwise consider. Prohibitively expensive in my view (although for that reason I haven]t bought from them for a couple of years; perhaps things have changed)

Saw Neal's warning on shipping too late...

Picked up a variety of 2015 Burg 1ers (Serafin Cazetiers, Jadot Cazetiers, Thibault LSG), 2015 burg village (Claude Dugat Gevrey, Lambrays MSD), some 2016 (Jadot Fuees), 2013 Cogno Ravera and a couple one-offs (e.g. 2014 Chevillon Cailles)

Yup, their shipping is very high. They do have an option for pick up in Clifton, NJ for about $10/case. It's annoying but I will make a trip out of it. See some friends in NJ while I pick my order up.

Sorry /@gr@\ (you really need to have a chat with your parents about that name they gave you, or with Todd about board policy). I thought about posting the warning earlier but I don't really like being negative about retailers without strong reason.

FYI, don't forget sales tax. I bought 3 cases from an HDH auction earlier in the summer. I knew that I would be in Chicago for the PJ shows later in the summer, so I considered picking up during my trip to Chicago. I requested a shipping quote and pickup quote. There was a difference of $60 between picking up and shipping. For $60, I decided it wasn't worth my time and effort to pick up and haul 3 cases back with me.

Yes, HDH shipping prices are absurd. With my first experience about 2 years ago I was charged $80 for shipping 6 bottles of bourbon. The 3 cases of wine was about $60 per case.

True, it’s probably not worth bringing it bc of sales tax.

I've never bought from HDH prior to this week but the shipping charge was $49 for 12 bottles to go out here to Southern Cal. That doesn't seem out of line to me. And no sales tax, FWIW.

I used to buy a fair bit from HDH until they moved to a more auction-based model over retail, and about doubled the shipping costs. Too bad, great merchandise and customer service.

Something does not compute here. Chicago to Laguna Beach, 2022 miles. Chicago to Tampa, 1172 miles. 12 bottles vs 1 bottle.

CA is probably the easiest state to ship to whereas others may necessitate the use of a third party solution.

They used to ship to VA but can't do it now. I used a D.C. address for shipping that a friend let me use.
Cost was just under $4/bottle for ground shipping via FedEx.

Shipping to Domaine NJ with them seems pretty good. Was told they do once-a-month temperature controlled shipping to Domaine, for $20/case. Cheaper than Fedex!

Wow, that is high. Last month Winebid shipped me 24 bottles in three boxes (16-750s, 4-375, 4-magnums) from Napa to Chicago for $63 via Fedex Ground.

I had a quote of $89 to ship five bottles, ground, to Ohio. I cancelled my order and they were nice about it. I know the law--but it's strange how it's enforced. K&L is the only retailer I've found that won't ship to Ohio at all though.

I think it’s mentioned above (and I’ve mentioned it previously elsewhere) but if you are in the NY area, ship through the NE shipping partner MWC if you can. $10 for up to a case to Clifton, NJ. That’s where I store so HDH is a fine place to buy still for me. It’s the shipment out of that location that will kill you.

Flickinger OTOH has become more difficult in terms of shipping from Chicago, and their prices have gone up for many wines.
