If you could only keep 3 online retailers...

#1 Post by Mattstolz » November 13th, 2018, 11:03 am

I'll admit I don't have many wine shipping seasons under my belt. I'm still small fish overall as far as order/shipment size goes. But this shipping season has illustrated to me that I probably need to keep the total number of retailers I use low instead of utilizing a "spread the wealth" policy and just ordering on a whim from whichever retailer I happen to see a wine at first.

So my question is, if you could only continue to order from 3 online retailers (or retailers with an online presence), who would you continue to use?

From my year this year I would say:

1. Chambers
2. Envoyer
3. ??? probably JJBuckley

1) K & L
2) I have had nice interactions with Vino Quest
Anton Dotson

What is man, when you come to think upon him, but a minutely set, ingenious machine for turning, with infinite artfulness, the fine red wine of Shiraz into urine?

I am more inclined to give up on line retail purchasing. It's too much of an enabler.

JJBuckley has always been my largest shipment of the season (until I joined Enjoyer's list this year) and I think I would keep them mostly because I really enjoy my interactions with the person who handles all my orders and because their private client prices can be pretty good deals (dont look now but 2011 Produttori Ovello is $39)

I've only started buying online in the last calendar year, so my list is rather thin.

1. Grand Vin Wine Merchants
2. Winex
3. Chambers

The original appeal of GVWM and Winex was their compatibility with PayPal. I've since come to appreciate their deep inventories and competitive pricing.

im curious as to why? ive had some annoyances with shipping but the retailers themselves have always been great.

EDIT: just noticed you're in a much better wine location than I am. Im guessing availability typically has a ton to do with it.

Honestly, I used them when I just started out. My cellar is now 500 bottles plus. I am in no need of finding wines with some age on them anymore nor do I feel that I get any bargains from online retailers. I really like the interaction I have with the wineries directly. I buy mostly from allocations and a little bit at my brick and mortar store for french wines.

Chambers and b21. I use others, and some others are really good (Weygandt, Bassins, Rare Wine Company, etc.), but these two just have it all, Chambers for my quirky palate, b21 for its Bordeaux and daily drinkers.

I'm from New York. My local home wine shops are Zachy's (5 miles to the shop, 3.5 miles to the warehouse for pick up) and Grapes (Posner 4.5 miles). My local office wine shop is Crush (5 blocks) . Why would I deal with an on line retailer? On line is for winery allocations.

I totally get that. half the shops I order from are in your area. I wouldn't pay for shipping either if I had that kind of selection within (easy) driving or walking distance.

Interesting that I don’t see SommPicks. Bought from them on the East Coast and more recently in CA.

Now K&L is nearby so even though they are online, for some crazy reason I don’t consider them that for me.

K&L (but I always do in-store pickup)
Envoyer
SommPicks

Those are actually the only three I use. There are way too many great local walk-in options for me to want to hassle with shipping costs, logistics, risks. I can live with the shipping stuff from Envoyer less than 50 miles south of me, and from SommPicks 400 miles north of me.

If JJBuckleys website was better I'd consider using them.

Envoyer.

Everything else is widely split between 10 different merchants, from K&L to Chambers and Crush. I go for deals or harder to find and fairly geeky wines. A number of great retailers but I’m not going to overpay for loyalty. I get shut out of low-allocation deals by even the best of them (goes with being a small fish in a big pond).

Bassins is my local brick-and-mortar store, so I’m lucky there, given their phenomenal selection and service.

I don't use Envoyer's website, but I find their email ordering system to be very easy. Agree their website is awful.

SP is super easy, and I love how I can view all whites on one page, and all reds on one page, and they're sorted by region, and then alphabetical within.

And do you really find K&L's website difficult to use?!?

to be fair, I only find K&Ls website difficult to use in order to get wine HERE, because they don't ship to SC. [snort.gif]

but no their website is very easy to navigate. and i agree about the other two as well. its funny because Envoyers emails are great and the website is terrible, but for SommPicks I find the opposite to be true: the website isnt bad but the emails are like a treasure hunt.

the main problem I find with JJBuckley's site is I hate how it loads the wines 15 at a time. and then when you want to see details on one and go back again, you have to start all the way over. it is not really conducive to browsing

You nailed my problem with Buckley's website. I am rarely seeking a particular wine when I'm online shopping; rather, I'm browsing. I don't get SP's emails ... hmmmmmmmm...

he only sends them once per quarter i believe. entire inventory list at a time in PDF or excel format. its awesome if you just wanna do a quick search because you're looking for something in particular, but its impossible to browse because theres just too much coming at you at once.
