  • 2009 Pieropan Soave Classico La Rocca - Italy, Veneto, Soave Classico (12.11.2018)
The first bottle was over the hill, the second bottle was still in decent condition. Markedly dark golden color on the glass. On the nose very ripe fruited and mature with some oxidative notes. On the palate likewise very rich and ripe - early on quite soft but the acidity did manage to pick up with some time in the glass. Has lost most of its youthful freshness but definitely has not gone flat. While drinkable still it does not offer that great of an experience at this point on its own but the oxidative notes help it work with creamy dishes quite well.
  • 2013 Eva Fricke Lorcher Riesling trocken - Germany, Rheingau (12.11.2018)
On the dry side most definitely with high, brisk acidity yet not one bit austere. Nicely minerally with the most deliciously tangy punch of lime. I find it likely that this has been quite aggressive earlier in its youth but now seems to be in a very good place. Very obviously a product of native yeast fermentation but only in a positive way.
  • 2012 Château la Rose du Temple - France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol (12.11.2018)
Somewhat boring and overly primary on PnP, with time this turned out to be the most pleasant and enjoyable young Pomerol. Very much classic on the nose with ripe yet dry cassis fruit, plum, well-handled oak and some herbal notes. On the palate fairly rich and generous yet with good freshness and definition and everything in nice balance. While not perhaps the most complex wine out there at such young age it did serve awfully well as a part of the classic Entrecôte, Bearnaise and Bordeaux trio.
  • 2013 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux - France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru (12.11.2018)
Somewhat restrained on the nose with notes of lemon, white peach, crushed rock and a hint of nuts. On the palate likewise not the most expressive wine out there yet with a downright luxurious mouthfeel, uplifting acidity and the most delicious savoriness about it. Despite not screaming greatness I do find it a great wine and can’t help but enjoy each and every sip to the fullest. Nothing short of perfect with a white truffle risotto.
  • 2008 Pierre Gimonnet & Fils Champagne Cuvée Paradoxe - France, Champagne (12.11.2018)
A great nose here with notes of red cherry, fresh apple, almond and torrefaction. On the palate on the dry side with superb acidity and fantastically firm texture - there is some real tension here. Pinot Noir definitely dominates the flavor profile but stylistically this is typical Gimonnet: energetic, focused and highly refreshing. While possessing some delicious autolytic tones this is very much a youngster still with a great future ahead.
  • 2015 François Dumas Vin de France La Vigne de Jean - France, Vin de France (8.11.2018)
Day 1: After more than an hour in the decanter the nose shows tangy red fruits (cherry, cranberry), violets, granite and something wood-like yet not exactly oaky. On the palate medium-bodied, fairly lean and low in tannins. It is very bright and lively with supreme focus and confidence about it. While it has relaxed and opened up a bit it is still seriously reductive with a tight, tart finish.

Day 2: Flavorwise very much unchanged but the palate has rounded out nicely and seems to have gained some additional richness. Continues to be extremely firm, chiseled even. Drinking quite well now, but this is a most serious Gamay that just does not offer the kind of easy, cheerful fun at such a young age as one might expect. Really high quality stuff though!
