SQN Questions

#1 Post by Mark Y » August 13th, 2018, 11:11 am

Hoping some long time SQN buyers can help me with a few questions..

1. What's the cadence of SQN release? once a year? multiple times? or at hoc - random times?

2. how much are the syrah/grenache normally? I ask b/c i was added to SQN for the first time earlier this spring, and offered a 6btl box set of 2014 SQN (capu de putti and Testa cherubini). It was $1500 for the 6 btls (plus tax/shipping etc).
Now i'm just offered (second time ever), two 3 packs of 2016 syrah and grenache. $510 per 3 pack (so $1,020 for 6 pack). Why the large difference in pricing?

3. Was there any 2015 offered? any idea why i wouldn't be offered any of that? not a big deal but more of a curiosity..

Thx!
Y.e.

SQN releases twice a year...the EBA(extended barrel aged) and the white...and then the regular Syrah and Grenache. The 14 was the EBA, and the 16, that is just coming out, is the reg release. 15 reg was last year.

Buzz, thank u. Do u have to buy both to stay on the list? Or they are separate lists. I probably will anyways but want to know the rule and if u skip one do u get dropped.

Also what’s unique about the EBA other than the barrel aging time. Is there a vineyard / site diff?

Thx!

Yea the fruit for eba is all from their Eleven Confessions vineyard. Considered more high end reserve if you will. Just one list. There is a HUGE waiting list, so if you skip, you probably won't get axed, just will be offered less next time. If you skip again, then you probably won't get an offer. If you don't want your full allo, you can just request a lesser allo, and that's what they will offer you. I toned down my reg allo to 6 and 3, and that's what I get offered every year.

Mark,

I started buying with the 2012 EBA vintage (you seemed to start with the 2014). So I've had a few years to settle into the pattern. What I will say is that they were super receptive to my writing to them and asking for something that fit me the best. The EBA's are more money...but worth EVERY penny. All their wines are special...and I think once you get your first shipment it makes sense to let the bottles rest for 30 days and pull the cork to see what all the fuss is about. I was very happy that I did that with the Syrah I opened...

Another question (I'm bookmarking this thread!):

When do the two yearly releases actually ship?

I don't know what the reality is, but I wouldn't make the assumption that skipping a release as a new list member and/or no communication with SQN would yield future offers.

Strangely, that is the EXACT same day I got this email from SQN:

Dear Kevin,

We will gladly add your information into our data base, although unfortunately for the time being it will have to be something as obnoxious as a WAITING LIST because our active mailing list has been completely full for a while. We will keep you updated however and we will do our best to make the wait as short as possible. Please be patient, we’ll get there.

Thanks again and all the best wishes,
Stephanie Greco

I had sent them an email the day before requesting that I be added. So apparently you missed getting this year's offers by 1 day!

Yes, I'm a bastard for pointing this out.

Sounds like I will never get offered a magnum. I buy every year, but have never wish listed and in some offerings I only order 6 of the 9 offered. Oh well.

They send you an email to update address ect ahead of time. It may not have an actual ship date though, but I’m sure that would be the time to make any requests if you have conflicts. You then get a notice from the shipper that it is in process.

Mine are shipping! Current temps in S. CA are in the mid-to-upper 70s (and all over the place in Boston). Although they confirmed my address, the first I heard about a shipping date was the UPS emails with tracking numbers (2 boxes, 1 for white, 1 for reds).

Mark, be careful with aging them in the paper. I had mold problems in my Eurocave and now only put the EBA bottles on shelves and always unwrap them. YMMV but it made a big difference for me.

Would removing them in the tissue wrappers have any effect on their future auction value?

Just curious, even though I plan on drinking them. I removed the wrappers and stuck them in the OWC, which is so attractive, I had to make turn it into furniture lol.

I can't effectively speak to the future auction value. While I would prefer to keep them in the paper...they're more beautiful that way; yet I also want to keep them from collecting mold & moisture in the Eurocave.

I have always unwrapped bottles that come in paper when I unpack them (not just SQN, but also Saxum as several cabs). I'd rather see the label and not have to guess which wine it is when I pull to drink.

Anybody know anything about these wines? Any reviews out there yet? Maybe it's in the release letter but I haven't gotten it yet
Yes, the WA (William Kelley) released reviews this week:
2016 Sine Qua Non Grenache Dirt Vernacular -- 96
2016 Sine Qua Non Syrah Cypher 16 -- 96+

Also the spring EBA release:
2016 Sine Qua Non Deux Grenouilles White -- 94
2014 Sine Qua Non Grenache Testa dei Cherubini -- 98+
2014 Sine Qua Non Syrah Capo dei Putti -- 96+
Quite a downgrade from previous WA's scoring.

yes, but it is WK scoring, not WA.....RP was WA for a long time, now it is more alphabet soup with the scores with no attempt by WA for consistency in the alphabet

My 3 bottles fit fine on the rack. In a space meant for 4 bottles.

I’m on the list and I couldn’t tell you a score for any wine from the last 7-8 years. It really doesn’t matter what the next person in line at the WA thinks at this point. You know what you are getting with these wines and I dont think many buying decisions are made from the reviews. I guess it might affect the retail market, but if I was interested I’d at least want someone’s opinion who has reviewed them in the past to get a gauge on vintage quality compared to other recent releases.

These EBA’s were higher in ETOH than I was hoping they would be. It’s back up into the 16% range...

An honest question but hasn't this always been the case? Or did these 'dip lower' in recent vintages?

And as far as ratings go, I wouldn't think this would matter whatsoever if you are purchasing for your own pleasure and not to either resell or 'impress others' with scores.

I think it's more 'responsible' for a new reviewer to review them as he or she sees them rather than 'rubber stamping' them based on the past - as long as explanations play that out.

Cheers.
