On mobile, the name of the original poster of the thread doesn't appear, only the person who posted last does. Can we please get that fixed? It shows on my desktop.

Can you post what you see when you try? Leave it 'broken' or whatever so I can take a look at the URL, etc
I already fixed it. When I originally added the links I got the “Images cannot exceed 1024 pixels in height” message.

Like this:

Image
Found the setting for that - just unsure how big we WANT the images on here, as if we go full size, it's going to adjust the whole browser window.

I'll amp it up to the native size of iPhone 4, iPad 3 - 1936 wide by 2592 high
Just ran in to this same error of "“Images cannot exceed 1024 pixels in height” linking to a 254k photo ( http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-R8SbnzJNmLs/U ... cillis.jpg ). I downloaded it and uploaded as an attachment but it was more convenient in the past to just resize it. Is there a work-around? There was no auto-sizing with the new image button.

Just added a sweet feature to Grand Cru Crü - as if they needed any more trick functionality - only they are allowed to hide online status! When you login, you can click 'hide online status' as some are prone to do (not sure why, frankly) and you can be online but the ONLINE ribbon doesn't appear over your avatar. Non-GCC members can select the button, but it won't work!

I just noticed that my name appears on "Who Is Online" list at the bottom of the page (no avatar) and I have the "Hide My Online Status" box checked yes on my control panel [scratch.gif] I do prefer to hide my online status. Can this be fixed? Do you have to be Grand Cru member to hide your online status now?
This is the deal with hiding online status, near as I can tell.

Changes you make to "hide online status" in the user control panel don’t take effect until you log out and log in again. You can’t just leave the page or close the tab and return. You have to log out/log in.

When hidden, your own name will still appear at the bottom of the page, in italics, but it will only be visible by you. I guess in case you forget who you are.

The "online" sash by your avatar on your posts also disappears only after making the selection on the control panel and logging out/in.

I’m a GCC so I don’t know if any of this is different for non GCC members.
And you show offline now, so it worked

The second part of your answer doesn't help with regard to the problem. Nowhere in the thread does it say how expanding the screen will restore the name of the original thread poster. Unlike Ken Vastola, most of us don't have the time, nor the inclination to read every thread that's posted and most of us have posters that we prefer to read and some that we don't, so it's important to see the thread author. Robin Garr ran into this problem when he originally changed the forum software of the Wine Lovers Discussion Group around 13-14 years ago and his aww shucks attitude about the issue cost him a ton of participants.

Mobile screens are MUCH smaller, so they can't show all the information that a desktop browser does - they are, at best, 1/10 the size. I'm working on seeing if there's a way to make a setting to allow those with smaller phone screen sizes (mine is the iPhone X and I get three columns when I turn mine sideways, which includes thread title, original thread title poster, number of replies, number of views, AND last post with the date it was posted) when turned sideways. So far, no solution.

There is no 'aww shucks' attitude, Brad. Do what you want, but know that I've personally invested so far over 35 hours with a contracted specialist at a rate of $60/hr to get this forum moved to the better server, packed with a ton more features, and trying to please everybody. The mobile style we used to use was a custom job, and didn't have anywhere near the number of features the current one does, including simple little things like smilies and avatars. We're now working on a nearly fully functional browser on mobile devices, and the forum software is now capable of being upgraded to each of the newest, greatest software versions as they come available. If I can't come up with a perfect solution for you, I"m sorry, but know that there are only two issues on my 'to do' list with my paid contractor and this is one of them. I'm doing what I can, and I'm sorry to disappoint you.

No need to get defensive, Toodles. I didn't say you had an aww shucks attitude, but that Robin did and I certainly appreciate all that you've done and are doing here. I'm just raising the issue that being able to see who started a thread is important to a lot more folks than just me.

'Someone else did this and they lost users' - that's worth getting defensive given the amount of time and money invested in this, Braddles. It wasn't meant from you as a compliment or a thank you.

Can you please post a screenshot of your phone view from landscape mode? You can post here or email me. If it's a screen that allows you to pinch it, pinch it sideways as much as possible (it will stop at the default setting, I imagine, if you have text set to something higher than default) so I can see what you see. I can't otherwise.

Profiles are now fixed - took days to figure out where that Jabber code was hard-coded inside the theme, but it's out now, so you can update your profiles if you like. I know some wanted to fill in their occupations but there was a strange Jabber error message when Jabber was disabled (since it's not been around since the 90's)

Thanks. I've discovered that it's a pixel issue - older phones don't have the number of pixels that newer phones do, so the width of the forum tables are maxed out on older phones, but newer ones get the full width. Obviously you don't NEED to get a new phone, with more pixels in the browser, but once you do, your WB experience will improve, so that's good!

Might be size of the font setting on your iphone - I have mine set at default, the small size most people can't see. Regardless, I'm researching it
If it’s if any help I set the font to the smallest size possible for that screen capture. I’m unable to find any setting called ‘default’ and Google has been no help in locating it. Anyway, that size text IS, indeed, too small.
Too small- agreed.

My phone is current - iPHone 8 - but I don’t see the box on the right, either.

HOWEVER, I have noticed that you can click on the name/date/time of the “last post” and it will go right to that post, and you can also click on the red box on the left if there are new unread posts and it swill jump to the first unread post.

Cool! Two options - either the red box/icon OR the date/time! Maybe that will work for those who are having issues with it.

Hairy, dammit.

And the red box take you to the last unread post whereas the date/time takes you to the last post.

My phone is current - iPHone 8 - but I don’t see the box on the right, either.

HOWEVER, I have noticed that you can click on the name/date/time of the “last post” and it will go right to that post, and you can also click on the red box on the left if there are new unread posts and it swill jump to the first unread post.
yep! You can't click the name tho, it'll send you to their profile. Click the date/time
That's cool, though with my 6S I don't get a working widget for the "last post" thing, what does that look like on a newer phone? I'll use that on the desktop, though.

Ok, see if this helps (for those with phones that have enough pixels to see what is demonstrated here - can do the same when I get my hands on an older phone)

Hairy, dammit.

And the red box take you to the last unread post whereas the date/time takes you to the last post.
HAIRY Helpful strikes again!!

Brad Kane, this is the feature you want, right?
Yeah, that was the first thing I was asking about. Thanks.

However, I'm confused about your post about older phones and pixels. Are you saying that with newer phones, people will be able to see who started the thread as well as who posted last on mobile devices, rather than just who posted last, as I see?

Yes, on a phone with more pixels, you see this (all the way down - in fact, so much, there's white space on either side):

Using this on mobile now causes a lot of the elements on the screen to move around because of other elements loading (both the ad load and some resizes of the icons on top). Any way you can specify the sizes of the elements a priori so the webpage doesn't redraw and move everything around back and forth on load?

Very helpful, yes that works on my 6S, so a relatively older phone.

...This mobile browser has ALL the features of the desktop, and turning horizontal/vertical changes the experience as needed. Vertical gives you quick access for those who are accustomed to just viewing new posts in a bunch of threads (like me) - turning the phone sideways gives you a broader, wider array of features so you can get whatever you want, then turn it back for easy scrolling/reading
This is a very cool feature. Thanks for the upgrade. Huge improvement in most every way.

That’s not/wasn’t from WB, that’s a browser worm - happens mostly on Mac devices, all arrays of websites. Thousands of articles on the web about it. You are GCC so you will not get ANY ads from WB

Now that I finally have figured what I need to figure out I’ll say that this is a major improvement over the old format. It is also vastly superior to Vinous in terms how it works on mobile devices, but then even the old format was superior to Vinous in that regard.
Big kudos to the team. [thankyou.gif]

It ain’t the pixels.

iPhone 6s: 1334 x 750 pixels - shows all 4 columns in landscape
Galaxy S9: 2960 x 1440 pixels - shows only 1 column in landscape

It must be something about the way the phone processes the display data.

I don't see any way to create a poll in the new format, and the counts on the existing polls seem to be lost.
Am I missing something obvious? If not, is this something that will be added back in time?

Yeah, still there - Peter, you can only do a poll if you are creating a topic - can't do a poll as a reply. Just as before, below the text box is the ability to do a poll creation:

When I try to use the media tag on the following link I get the error “You cannot use certain BBCodes: [media].” Is that an error or is there something about the link which can not be used with the media tag?

A nit: you should pin this thread; it’s a PITA to scroll down to it each time . . .

Fixed the latter one, super easy (instructions posted elsewhere as well, like the 'media' thread) - just put the entire URL in between the 'media' code (which shows up when you click the media button, right next to spoiler - looks like a monitor)

All in all the media button works across a MASSIVE array of sites, automatically parsing them for embedding into posts. Just put the URL between the code, boom, done.
I tried to edit an earlier post to repost a Youtube video. I used the Media button and got this message: "You cannot use certain BBCodes: [media]."

Boom, denied!

On the mobile site, there used to be an easy way to PM a poster with their post quoted. Is there a way on the new site?

Again, it's a landscape thing for me, where I can see the command to email or PM users. Click the one on the left for PM and it quotes the post in your PM
