Visiting a Sangiovese Legend: MONTEVERTINE

Hello fellow wine geeks, I just wanted to share my most recent article on a visit to Monteveretine in Tuscany, high up in the Radda in Chianti zone of Chianti Classico.

Enjoy!

Nice write-up, Tom. Been thinking of visiting Tuscany and in particular the Montevertine winery, as I love the wines. Was it difficult to get in for a tasting with them?

I’m also curious about this, because the next time I find myself around Florence it would be top of my list.

Not an easy visit at all. You will probably have to work through Rosenthal.

Certainly one of my favorite producers in the world. And it is funny that you post this as I was thinking back about the visit in 2014. Drank a 2014 PdC last night, unfortunately was showing some VA. No glitz and glam here. Small, tight and a bit spartan. Some of the most interesting and fascinating Tuscan wines that I have ever tasted.

Only one bout of upload vertigo, I better quit while I am ahead.

Heading there in two weeks and was going to call tomorrow to schedule a tasting. Sounds like it’s not going to work…bummer.

You never know, sometimes the wizard answers the phone.

Any thoughts on the winemaker’s history of racist statements? Have people considered him to be truly apologetic/more thoughtful than before, or was that just lip service paid to quell an uproar?

I don’t personally know enough to say definitively one way or another, but that history has made me avoid seeking out the wines again. I would be happy to learn otherwise, though.
