TN: Giacosa weekend - lunch at Masseria

GIACOSA WEEKEND - LUNCH AT MASSERIA - Masseria, DC (5/27/2018)

Chef Nicholas opened the restaurant just for us. The dishes were a couple steps above the dinner.

Dom Perignon Rose

  • 2005 Dom Perignon Champagne Rosé - France, Champagne
Expressive nose displaying generous red fruit, raspberry soda, strawberry, fresh clear apple juice, rose, cinnamon and other sweet spices, copper, white pepper and wet stone. There is a hint of green that is not bothersome. Very good concentration, abundant delicious red fruit, fine generous mousse, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a medium to long raspberry soda and white pepper driven finish. Very yummy! (94 pts.)
  • 1980 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon Rosé - France, Champagne
Slightly cloudy and brownish salmon color. Vinous nose displaying shy red and yellow fruit, strawberry, dry peach, sous bois, smoke salmon, toffee, caramel and earth. Fully mature palate impression, fading shy but sweet red fruit, shy mousse, medium acidity and mineral, and a medium long shy red fruit driven finish with a hint of damp cellar and sous bois at the end. Needs to be drunk up unless cellared perfectly. (92 pts.)

Blanc de Noir

  • 1999 Bollinger Champagne Vieilles Vignes Françaises - France, Champagne
Rich deeply toned complex nose displaying opulent yellow fruit, dry peach, dry apricot, red currant, apple, cinnamon, biscotti, white pepper and limestone. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered sweet yellow fruit, very fine generous mousse, perfect amount of acidity and mineral and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with cinnamon and white pepper at the end. Drinking beautifully, at the peak. Not sure about being perfect but so darn sumptuous. (96 pts.)
  • 2008 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Inflorescence Blanc de Noirs Cote de Bechalin - France, Champagne
Irresistibly delicious nose displaying opulent yellow fruit with a hint of red, peach soda, apricot, apple, dry orange peel, essence of raspberry, brioche, sweet spices and copper/limestone. Excellent concentration, finely layered opulent yellow and red fruit, abundant very fine mousse, creamy and airy, perfect amount of acidity and mineral and a long sweet yellow and red fruit driven finish with cinnamon and copper at the end. Simply delicious! (95 pts.)

Coche CC

  • 2011 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
The fruit expression has transformed from fresh white to rich yellow. Expressive nose displaying opulent rich yellow fruit, lemon curd, lemon tart, white peach, apple butter, a hint of Coche flint, brioche, sesame and limestone mineral. Already showing beautifully integrated opulent palate, layers upon layers of rich yet pure yellow fruit, oily without being heavy, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, and a long hedonistic yellow fruit driven finish. Drinking beautifully, no need to wait. (98 pts.)

Giacosa - Flight 1

  • 1978 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Speciale Bussia di Monforte - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Expressive surprisingly youthful nose displaying dry red fruit, dry cherry, cherry liqueur, fruit cake, still showing ink, anise, tar, tobacco, strong iron, rose, leather and earth. Incredibly youthful palate, layers upon layers of decadent dry red fruit, rich, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, still coarse tannins and a long decadent red fruit and iron driven finish with tobacco and leather at the end. The last bottle from 2015 also came from Paul. This seems more youthful but also a bit coarser. (95 pts.)

Giacosa - Flight 2 plus '71 Gaja

  • 1971 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco San Cristoforo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Fully mature nose displaying subtle cherry fruit, caramel, leather, sweet spices and damp earth. Beautifully integrated palate, warm and round red fruit, quite soft with only a hint of tannins, bright acidity, good mineral presence and a medium to long subtle red fruit driven finish with caramel and leather at the end. This is a fully mature Giacosa with mostly tertiary expression where the fruit expression is indistinguishable. If you are a fan of fully mature Giacosa, you will find this very special. Decanted at home, it threw a lot of sediment. A very rare bird. (95 pts.)
  • 1971 Gaja Barbaresco - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Beautiful mature large scale nose displaying strawberry jam, dry cherry, leather, curry, dark spices, strong iron/mineral. Fully integrated harmonious palate, nicely layered subtle sweet red fruit, silky and polished, bright acidity, strong iron mineral, mostly resolved tannins and a medium to long subtle sweet fruit driven finish with iron and leather at the end. I slightly prefer the rounder and warmer red fruit of the 71 Giacosa San Cristoforo. At the peak but no need to rush. Excellent showing. (94 pts.)

Giacosa - Flight 3

  • 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Santo Stefano - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Expressive youthful nose displaying opulent ripe red and black fruit, dry cherry, fruit cake, brown sugar per Bryan, soy, rose, perfume, balsamico, leather, tar, caramel and iorn/earth. Incredibly silky, rich and sensual palate, nicely layered slightly dry red fruit, medium acidity, strong mineral, noticeable but sweet tannins and a long seamless decadent red and black fruit driven finish. It clearly displays the vintage character with very ripe slightly roasted fruit and rich palate. Drinking beautifully but no need to hurry. (97 pts.)
  • 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Villero di Castiglione Falletto - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Medium expressive nose displaying pure subtle black fruit, black cherry, blackberry, a hint of cedar, dark spices, rose, tar, caramel, leather and iron/earth. Fully integrated harmonious palate, finely layered dry cherry, silky and polished, medium acidity, nicely integrated tannins and a long seamless subtle cherry and blackberry driven finish with iron and dark spices at the end. Most subtle expression of the flight, relatively speaking. (94 pts.)
  • 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Falletto di Serralunga d’Alba - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Big scale imposing youthful nose displaying decadent slightly dry red and black fruit, black cherry, dry cherry, blackberry liqueur, strong iron, tar, licorice, rose, leather and earth. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of decadent black fruit, rich yet precise and detailed, perfect amount of acidity, unbelievable amount of iron/mineral, still noticeable but unobtrusive tannins and the finish that never ends. The most powerful, concentrated and masculine wine of the flight. (98 pts.)
  • 1990 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
Most perfumed and sensual nose of the night. Expressive nose displaying ripe dark fruit, dark cherries, blackberries, rose, floral perfume, black truffle, dark spices, curry power, leather, tar, caramel and mineral. Fully integrated sensual palate, very finely layered sweet black fruit, very precise and detailed, perfect amount of acidity and mineral, very fine tannins and a long slightly dry black cherry and rose driven finish. (98 pts.)

Giacosa - Flight 4

  • 1996 Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco Riserva Asili - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barbaresco
Expressive nose displaying decadent yet pure red fruit, cherry, dry cherry, strong licorice, ink, tar, rose, spicy spices dark caramel, leather and iron/mineral. Excellent concentration, layers upon layers of decadent red fruit, silky and polished, strong iron/mineral, very noticeable but fine tannins and a long decadent cherry driven finish with spicy spices at the end. The 96 Bordeaux, Burgundy and Barolo clearly reflect the vintage character, pure, precise and structured, which is fascinating. (96 pts.)

We enjoyed the 75 Yquem from the night before. Once again, a great time was had by all!

Tremendous line up, very nice! 15 bottles for 6 people … livers of iron!

Great stuff Kevin.

Sounds like an outstanding way to pass an afternoon, Kevin!

Always appreciate your detailed notes and fantastic pics Kevin, keep it up - great stuff!

We always share with the staff. Chef Nicholas is a wine geek, plus three four cooks, sommelier and etc, all together ten plus staff enjoyed our wine.

Kevin,
Amazing food photos. Where’s the pic of the cots you slept in at the restaurant between the prior night’s dinner and this lunch (and afterwards!)? neener

I only have white label (Santo Stefano) from 1996, but I’m encouraged by your report on the Asili riserva. The other flights don’t look so bad either. [cheers.gif]
Regards,
Peter

He opened the restaurant for 5 people? The prix fixe must have been astronomical! Sounds like a fabulous meal though and the wines are killer!

Lunch was for 6. It was astronomical indeed.
