TN: 2007 San Felice 'Pugnitello' [Toscana]

2007 San Felice ‘Pugnitello’ [Toscana] Although this sounds like a fantasy named wine – Vigorello, Ceparello etc. – Pugnitello is actually an ancient local varietal that has been resurrected. Apparently the university convinced a few producers to plant it and then even bottle it up by itself. I found it to be a very darkly colored wine, almost Petit Sirah/Verdot type of hue. It’s pretty big, full bodied and has lots of anise and licorice. For my tastes, I don’t find it to be particularly Italian - its more on the tannic side than acidic/zesty. It’s a good wine for drinking by itself, or maybe with meat, but not tart enough for rigatoni with eggplant and fresh mozzarella. A very tasty enjoyable wine still, but a bit overpriced at current release prices, IMO. A- in my ledger.
