You also have to admit that buying is a significant part of the fun. Not as much fun as the drinking, but there is a lot of satisfaction in it.

I was just thinking how much the act of searching for and finding bottles is a big part of the gratification of wine collecting. Drinking these bottles with friends is another bonus.

Oh yes - the searching, the finding, the thinking about, the drinking, the holding, the reading about, the sharing, and (not ashamed to admit it) just the *having* are all exciting and satisfying.

No wonder it's so hard to stop.

Neal, now that your firm’s fiscal year is over (I think you said end of January), are you retired yet?
Strangely, January has 36 or 37 days some years at the firm. But yes, I packed up my desk on 1/31 and have been making a nuisance of myself at home since.

Hope it all works out well for you.

Buying is part of the fun. I'm trying to maintain my current cellar size, but it keeps creeping upwards. We drink 4 or 5 and then I go buy six. I am trying to be very selective but it is hard. There is always a new producer to try, a new vintage, etc.

Thanks very much all. I plan to teach a little and do pro bono work, so "retired" might be a bit of an exaggeration. I have one more argument in the 4th Cir for a pro bono client I promised to finish off. But as Dave said, I will now finally have time to correct all of your mistakes here.

One of the joys of retirement is to continue doing the parts of the work you enjoyed--on your own schedule--and shed all the rest. Enjoy correcting our mistakes.

Congrats to joining the club Neal. I may need to research some of the vinyl record stores in your neck of the woods that need some venture capital as they are going to have a new regular costumer. It won't be long before you are sneaking in the back door to hide your purchases.

Congrats, Neal, and enjoy!

I have mostly been failing at my self-imposed embargoes. But I'll get there. I have decided that after a couple of recent binges, and looking at my age, existing stock, available storage space, and available money, that I'm at least done buying (forever) dessert wines to cellar. I always like to have a bottle of tawny on hand, so that will continue to be replenished as it runs out, along with the occasional cheap stickie not meant for aging, but for vintage Port and other long-lived dessert wines, I plan to just drink what I have and make it last as long as it needs to. So far so good on deleting offers for same without even reading them. I have a couple of other categories, where I'm approaching hitting a lifetime supply and hope I can quit those as well when that happens.

My daughter is definitely the beneficiary of my hoarding, 6 cabs to the school auction and 3 BDX to the weekend ski trip. I keep the PN for myself and wife is starting to suck down various whites.
