Article: Madeira and the American Revolution

I enjoyed this article. Atlas Obscura is a great resource for off-beat travel destinations and other fun facts (no affiliation)

If you dig Madeira and history, I strongly recommend that you check out the thread started by Mr TomHill some time ago.

I referenced a great book in the discussion, Oceans of Wine: Madeira and the Emergence of American Trade and Taste by David Hancock.

Excellent article, BTW, Warren. The book I mentioned is an expansion on many of the concepts succinctly touched on in your article:

• The elite, exclusive branding of Madeira in early America;
• Adulteration techniques adopted by brokers to satisfy consumers’ preconceptions of what good Madeira looked/tasted like:
• The political elements of Madeira’s push into the burgeoning American market;
• Entertaining as a social construct among the wealthy, with Madeira in the middle;
• Blah blah blah.
