Although a 3ème Grand Cru Classé, Boyd-Cantenac is one of the least known classified growths from Margaux. The owner is Lucien Guillemet, who also runs the neighbouring Château Pouget, a 4ème GCC.
If you are looking for affordable, delicious, traditional Margaux, then you are exactly right here. First surprise, an explosive, deep nose of ripe red fruit, licorice, leather, and spices. Complex cherry fruit dominates on the palate, with a delicious hint of peppery freshness in combination with notes of forest floor and camphor that linger pleasantly. Surprisingly, after a while, the nose becomes more discreet, but the fruit more complex, showing additional notes of blackberry and blueberry fruit, minerals, and spices. The 2002 Boyd-Cantenac, 13% alcohol, is a wine with great character, purity and balance. Instead of concentration and power, this wine is an exercise in finesse and understatement. I’m delighted.
Lascombes 2002 is also excellent.
