2011 Antoniolo Gattinara - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara (10/21/2017)
Real special. First 30min was rough with slight cherry and sulfur aromas. After it warmed and breathed a tad it became something fabulous. A full, sappy textured wine with persistent acidity and elegant, complex aromas. Nose shows earth, licorice, cherry, tar, herbs…the whole mountain nebbiolo spectrum. Taste is very sappy and long, sweet cherry and a gorgeous aftertaste of rose petal and red licorice pastille lingering in the back of your mouth. Super sneaky tannin that really coats the back of your tongue.
I was very impressed with this base gattinara at $31. Would certainly give produttori and a few valtellina producers some competition at that price point.
Should age gorgeously for another ten years.
