Catastrophic Fires In Napa and Sonoma

#1 Post by Roy Piper » October 8th, 2017, 11:46 pm

The very high winds might have created our nightmare.

Potential Napa-altering fires underway. Began behind Silverado Resort and spreading fast up Atlas Peak, Yountville and Napa. In the eastern hills. Stags Leap area evacuated. Atlas Peak on fire.

Fire also in Calistoga in the western hills and potentially Knights Valley, Details on those are sketchy,

Less than 2 hours old and already out of control. It is currently 11:45PST. I am in Sonoma and one is over the back hills from where I live, but still 4 miles out.

I've never talked to friends in Napa who are this scared over a fire and we get one every year. And the night, is unfortunately, young.

Also now fires in Knights Valley and Calistoga near Tubbs. I make my wine on Tubbs, near Monetlena. It's all happening so fast, can't be sure of whats what.

It's the worst fire since my arrival in 2005 and its less than 3 hours old. Totally out of control.

Just before leaving the winery tonight the air started smelling overwhelmingly like smoke. We're on the other side of Santa Rosa, so the wind is probably only going to bring us the smell, but it's a scary conditions for fires tonight.

The smell of smoke is so strong in San Francisco, I thought it was in my building. I went outside to see if it was in my neighborhood, then when I couldn't see anything, I called the police non emergency line. I couldn't get through at all, I think a lot of people are calling. So, I looked online and read about the Atlas Peak fire and realized that's where the smoke is coming from, plus all the other fires up there that started tonight. I've never seen so many large fires start so quickly and so close together.

I hope everyone is safe tonight.

This is a scary story. Those winds driving a new fire in the middle of the night. I can’t imagine how scary that would be to be shocked out of a sound sleep and have to try to gather up and race off.

Just tried to get back to Kenwood from Sonoma. CHP turned us around at Arnold Dr.

asked about Kenwood, and the officer said, “It’s on fire”. f*ck.

Hope everyone got out safe.

Friend in Healdsburg reporting lots of evacuations around the area - stores left to burn as firefighters need to instead evacuate hospitals (Sutter and Kaiser), etc.

Hoping we get news of Merrill and everyone soon - stay safe!

Hope everyone in the fire areas stays safe. We've had some big wildfires in the Bay Area over the years, including the 1991 Oakland Hills fire in my area, but these fires make those other ones look small in comparison.

Very scary -- it seems that there are three separate fires burning. One in Sonoma, one in Calistoga and one on Atlas Peak. Is that right?

I believe it's actually 10 separate fires - my friend posted:
There are major, completely uncontained fires in every direction- Ukiah/Willits to the north, Lake County to the northeast, Calistoga and Napa to the east, Sonoma and Kenwood to the southeast, Santa Rosa and Windsor to the south, Petaluma to the southwest, Sebastopol and Forestville to the west.
Everything I’ve grown up and lived around for almost my entire life is on fire. I don’t know how to process this.
Evacuation updates etc can be followed here: http://www.nixle.us/city/ca/santa-rosa/

This is just a massive fire. I know many people who have lost their homes and/or businesses and hundreds more who have evacuated. It was a scary night, we douldn’t sleep. The smell of smoke and the high warm winds from the East. Our Son called at 2am and said Stagecoach Ranch was on fire. His Wife and Son evacuated to her Mom’s home in Moss Beach. My Daughter evacuated from Bennet Vlley to Santa Rosa near the JC and then d to evacuate from there. Many Sonoma County Schools are closed. Roads are a mess, traffic is at a standstill. Took my Wife nearly 2 hours to drive from Forestville to Rohnert Park to get to work.

The effect of this is going to be long lived. The loss of homes and businesses, the displaced residents. The economic hit to the area will be devastating. Still keeping me eye out the back door looking for embers but so far we’re safe in Forestville.

We live in Danville, 45 miles to the south of Napa, and we woke up from the smell of the smoke around 2AM. We thought that the fire was nearby because of the smoke. The local news is reporting that cell service is not available for the majority of the residents in the Napa Valley and Santa Rosa.

Please be safe everyone.

I guess I was naive enough to think that following the big rains of late 2016/early 2017, the wild fire threat would be reduced this season.
