Bird-related Wine Corks!

#1 Post by Gila Gatewood »

Greetings!

I collect wine corks with bird-related themes (long story... I love wine, and birds, and I have a 33-year-old companion parrot).

I have 60-plus (no duplicates) corks, and among them, two "mysteries" (unidentified corks), which were sent to me by a buddy who can't recall the brands.
Would you please take a look and tell me if you recognize them?
MANNN, I wish I had decided to collect bird-related wine LABELS... then I wouldn't have to buy the bottle to get a look at the cork!

Thank you for looking! And thanks to those of you who replied to me elsewhere on this subject.
:) Gila

Although I've never even seen the wine, let alone the cork, that latter one looks a little penguin like - could it be the Little Penguin brand?

I think both are from really cheap bottles. The first looks like Crane Lake and the second, as Ian said, is Little Penguin, I believe.

Ian, it's not Little Penguin... there are some examples bundled up in a rubber band in the photo of the collection... I wish I could post a gigantic picture so you could see all the lables.
ki1, I have a Crane Lake, too (with logo/label), and it's not that. Yeah, they probably are cheap... my buddy just bought them to try to score me some bird corks.
Oooooh, Neal... I'd love it to be a Screaming Eagle... that's probably the most coveted, expensive bird-related wine. I haven't seen the cork, so not sure what's on it. I keep an eye out on eBay, where the empties go for a thousand bucks or so.
Ryan... I don't think so...

Rivers-Marie, there is a bird on the label, also on the cork?? I thought so. Maybe I'll have to open a bottle to check.

Sorry, I cannot help identify those in the picture.

Rama and Brian... I have some Ravenwood corks from the 2000s, but that beauty is vintage!!!!!

Bearataur... ummm... let's see if I can do this...
Forsooth, thou mighty ursequine, indeed, 'tis a mighty multi-tasking mania: I besot my innards whilst collecting cutpurse corks!
Okay, yours was better.
Gorgeous African Grey there!!!!!!!!!!

Alan... any bird reference... picture or domaine must be MINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Love your name --- Wine-berg!

Scott... thanks! And yeah, there is many a slip 'twixt the label and the cork! Eeeek, Bearataur got me started.

Y'all are a hoot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel like nerding out and posting a list of all the brands I have so far... but first, I will need some (you guessed it) wine. I think list-making calls for a playful, zippy rose.

There's a member on here from Orlando named Robert and he's a huge collector too. In fact, his nickname is "Owlman." So I guess that makes four of you.

I'll see if I can go through some of my old corks to see whether I have some with birds that you might not have already. If so, I'll happily send them your way.

Dan... I don't THINK so, but this will be on my weekend research agenda. THANKS!

Jeff... thanks! Another research adventure. A likely-looking wine...

Ron... I have added them to my scavenger hunt list. I appreciate your help!

Corey... Owlman is #4??? The "club" is swelling!
I would be proud and grateful to be the recipient of your generosity. What do you do with your saved corks, if I may ask?

T. Thank you! Black Kite is now on my list, indeed! (Is that Snaggletooth? Exit, stage right!)

The one cork looks like a crane. There was a (I thought maybe now defunct) winery in columbia valley called Sandhill Vineyards I think (or Sandhill Winery)- Their logo was the sandhill crane. Looks a lot like this, but not quite exact. http://www.cellartracker.com/producer.a ... ucer=55148

The second one looks more like a crow or raven, than a penguin. Penguins have webbed feet and their beaks and tails look different than what's pictured.

I think this is a charming hobby, much better than our practice of throwing all our corks in a plastic bag in the garage whenever the drawer gets full.

So, I went through the drawer, perhaps 100 corks. Too bad I am not collecting shields or crowns or castles, lots of these. All I could come up with is these 2, I think the first sides are birds, the producers are on the other side. You are most welcome to them (and any others I find), if yuou like:

I have a couple, the Sami Odi would be fairly rare even in Australia (very talented young wine maker Fraser McKinley) https://sami-odi.com/wines/

And the Vogue CM might qualify?

Happy to pop them in the post if you are keen.

Robert... OMG, I need that, yes I do! How did you know??? I would steal that from my Abuela, if she were still alive, and had one!

Ron and Scott... it's on my research list for later. Thank you so much. I recall seeing zillions of sandhill cranes back in New exico, along the Rio Grande. Thanks!

Brad... agreed. I even thought maybe it was a lyrebird, due to the weird 3-tailed looking stuff. Nothing so far. But gracias!

Steve... really????? WOW. I'll message you with my address. I can't believe the friendliness of everybody here. Yes, I would LOVE those corks! May I reimburse you for postage?

Thanks to contributors here, I have reason to believe that the following wines may have bird corks.

Idlewild (The Bird). Thanks, David.
Castellare di Castellina. Thanks, Jeff.
Croze Cabernet and Stone the Crows Cabernet. Thanks, Ron.
Black Kite. Thanks, T.
Sandhill. Thanks, Ron and Scott.

Alas, I am poor, or I would find and order each, taking my chances on the bird-ness of the cork. While I am scrimping and plotting... does anybody have knowledge of said corks? Meanwhile, I'm researching each.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnd... thank you, ALLLL, for indulging me.

ki1, I have a Crane Lake, too (with logo/label), and it's not that.

It is very similar, buttttttt...
Thanks, folks.
You are all very indulgent of me and my weird hobby!!!!!!!!!!!
OK - I finally had a minute to actually do a search on this... the first one is definitely Tefft. Looks like they had a few variations on the logo over the years.

I just noticed that my PM to you did not send successfully a few days ago. I just tried again and no luck. The two mails are sitting in my Outbox. I successfully sent other mail...

I am so sorry!

I'm trying to figure this out...

:(

Just emailed you.

You have hit on a feature of the PM system that has baffled many people and spawned many threads. PMs show as sitting in the Outbox until the recipient opens them. So that just means he hasn't checked his Inbox yet.
Ripe fruit isn't necessarily a flaw.
