What was your wine board path to Wine Berserkers

#1 Post by Howard Cooper » May 31st, 2017, 6:55 am

Interested in seeing how we all got here.

My first wine board was the old AOL board. Not a real names board, which is unfortunate because I do not know who people were there. But, the breakout star of that board was a guy who seemed to taste a whole lot more and better Burgundies than anyone else. What a revelation. His name was Burghound.

After a while I experimented with other boards (and we stopped having AOL). My first one was Robin Garr's wine page. Liked it, not sure why I stopped posting there, but frankly I just found Mark Squires board and liked it better. Found some really good Burgundy people there. Went to my first offline as a result of that board. All of this was before it was taken over by Parker.

Spent a bit of time over time at Tom Cannavan's Wine-pages, a British wine board. It was interesting to get a different perspective from a bunch of knowledgable British and other European wine lovers and met some of them over time. Nice people. But, there was a vocal minority of people on that board who were snobs that looked down on Americans and over time I just got tired of that and went there less and less and now have not been there for years.

Squires eventually was taken over by Parker. Board frankly got too big and too angry. Too many new people who wanted to show that they knew more about wine than Parker did. So, it became too much about showing off and one had to get away from certain threads to actually talk about wine. Still, there was a really good Burgundy core there.

When that board was shut off from most of the world, I migrated here - had been here a bunch anyway. Pre-Parker shut-off, this board was a bit too California in orientation for me. But, over time, a lot of the interesting Burgundy, etc., people from Squires/Parker migrated here, so I am happy again. Over time, I think there has been less and less discussion of Parker (good and bad) here, which is good. There are actually a number of really good Bordeaux threads these days that have rekindled my interest in Bordeaux - for a long time it seemed like wine threads on Bordeaux were mostly about how Parker would or did rate a wine, when in the futures process he should rate a wine and how one's "portfolio" of Bordeaux was appreciating. Now, thanks to people like Panos Kakaviatos, Robert Alfert, Mark Golodetz and others there seems to be a strange trend brewing that Bordeaux is actually a wine people drink and not a financial asset. Very refreshing.

I dove right into the fire. I was following FMIII on Cellartracker and one day he posted a note with a reference to WineBerserkers. Before that I had spent a little time in the Snooth forums but nowhere else.

I'm probably still a relative newbie to many that are here -- but a few years ago I was researching the Rudy case, right around the time I had become serious about learning more about wine. The thread popped up in a Google search, and after diving down the rabbit hole, I have yet to emerge! So Berserkers is my first! [cheers.gif]

I started on the old Prodigy board where RMP was the Prodigy expert resource. Kind of followed that to Squires' board, but due to divorce-related personal restructuring cut way back on wine buying, and hence researching, and eventually forgot my PW. I did not go to eBob for a long time, preferring the paper, but eventually did and then, It was a real bitch to eventually reset it. The blog there was no longer what it once was, and started looking around and , voila!, stumbled into WB.

Probably the first for me was the alt.food.wine newsgroup, followed by Brad Harrington's West Coast Wine Net forum. Also spent a little time on VinoCellar but never found it very interesting to me. Then Squires/eBob, which led to Berserkers when the paywall went up.

Tried to sell Spectator some bulletin board software when they came on the internet. They turned us down and bought something else. I checked them out a few times but didn't hang around.

Then Squires.

Then some gardening sites.

When Mark shut everyone down, since everyone I knew was here, I came over here. Paid for a year over there too, but it pretty much was a ghost town.

Wine Spectator was my first, wasn't a big fan of it, but I checked in from time to time. Someone there referenced EBob/Squires and I went there to check it out, and was a big fan...not always a fan of the moderation, but the conversations and number of ITB folks was awesome. Then as with most, it went dark and I moved here. I briefly played around with the CellarTracker forum, but decided one was enough.

AltFoodWine
Wine Spectator
WLDG- Robin Garr Board (was really great for quite a while)
WCWN? - Brad Harrington (same time as above)
Squires Board
Parkour Board
Berserkers

All pretty similar at a high level (wine fiends) but each has its own special flavor.

alt.food.wine
Robin Garr.
Then Garr and Wine Therapy (turned into Wine Disorder)
Then Squires and Wine Therapy or Disorder.
Now here and Wine Disorder. I didn't get here by Squires/Parker closing down by by a post on Wine Disorder alerting me to its existence, though.

I started with AOL in 1993 or 1994, then quickly added Prodigy and then Compuserve. Dropped AOL, picked up alt.food.wine.

Moved to Squires when Mark started it and Prodigy shut down. Added WLDG (Robin Garr), which became my primary online home, and transitioned away from Compuserve. Later added Harrington's WCWN and cut way back on Squires, which by that time was eBob. Added Wine Therapy when Callahan started it (I still have a few T-shirts).

Went on a long hiatus (around 2003 or 2004 until 2011 or so) from online wine discussion and when I poked my head out again, everything had changed. I found my way here and to Wine Disorder where there were a lot of familiar faces and a lot of new ones as well. These are where I spend most of my time, but I occasionally peek at Cannavan's and Bordeaux Wine Enthusiasts as well.

Squires, pre and post eBob
Berserkers from around the time of the major exodus from eBob

It's so interesting how this whole thing has evolved, and the different paths of different people. I started on the WLTV forums. I started reading the Squires/Parker board because the knowledge of some of the people there impressed me, but I found I didn't like the overall tone/environment. Then I discovered this place. I like it here.

Then when that was going belly-up, I joined Auswine and Winestar forums, later adding Wine Pages and WLDG. A hiatus from Auswine led to starting posting at the short live Bocaccio wine forum. This is the most recent wine forum I've joined & I still participate at Wine Pages & Auswine.

I never got kicked off, though Squires threatened to kick me off one time (for something inadvertent and in my view fairly trivial in any case). And he nearly wouldn't let me on the board when I first signed up since he claimed I didn't use my real name and instead used the obvious fake wine name of Zinns. rolleyes

I started in '03 or so on the eBob board.

I was not kicked off eBob (although many believe that I was), but I was part of the fed up initial migration to this monstrosity. I'm pretty sure it was Jorge that urged me to come here. I think I'm Member #67 and I'm proud to be on the first page of the Member list. It's a great community and I'm sorry I've been MIA for so long! [cheers.gif]

Spectator
Squires / eBob
Berserkers

I remember going to the Spectator forum when I first established my home network many years ago. It was through that forum where I met some fellow winos (Vino Me, Chicago Wine Mafia, etc.). When it was obvious that Wine Spectator was more of a "wild west" forum without monitors, I moved on to eBob. When they went to a pay subscription service model, I looked for something else. I do not remember what exactly brought me to Wine Berserkers...but I have been enjoying the ride!

Cheers,
JP

Started with Squires but cannot recall how I got there. I was just getting back to this passion after a 1-2 year hiatus. The hype-machine was in full sling, 2003 Bordeaux, then 2005, then 2007 CDP, the greatest ever of any ever. The shit thereafter got ugly at eBob, especially during Sierra Crap-Shoot, but I generally shied away from all the BS. I got a PM one day, out of the blue, from someone who's name now escapes me, telling me about WB.com. I surfed around it, thought you guys were jilted Parker lovers 10x over, so stayed off the boards for a little, but surfed here. Eventually I joined. There is no comparison, this board has evolved into something far greater than eBob, a real sense of community.

What was your wine board path to Wine Berserkers

#48 Post by D.Callahan » May 31st, 2017, 4:18 pm

I joined Squires about the time Parker took it over, dabbled a bit with WLTV (early Gary was a hoot), got more involved in offlines with the West LA bunch, went to some great tastings and dinners with them, when the pay-wall went up a lot of the content went way down on Parker but the polite factor went way up (but it was a bit boring), still subscribe on e-bob, the west LA group turned me on to Berserkers and the rest is history.

Oops! I forgot I was on WS Forum for a while as well but haven't even looked at it for years even though I still subscribe to online WS.

All the cool kids left Squires so I came here.

What happened in particular?
The site was bought out and the new people running it, changed the orientation from a site based on community engagement, to one based on selling. The boards were stripped and old posts were lost. There was lots of hurt feelings and angry words and most people just left. I still check in sometimes but it's over.
