Not a fan. OTT stewed quality to the fruit. I don’t get it.

This is an averaging of every CdP tasted by every drinker who rated them, I take it. Further, although I have no doubt that 2010 will always merit the praise it has received from the beginning, it is much too young (at least for the Pegaus, Charvins, Vieux Telegraphes, etc. of the world) to have anything like a definitive reputation. And finally, none of these average ratings (except for 02, which astonishingly, still gets and 87.8) goes below 90 or above 91.6. If there was ever an example of the old saying about camels, committees and horses, this is it.

2002 averaged 87.8??? That seems nuts to me.

It’s not really a right or wrong thing, it’s just that the zeitgeist on WB is pretty different from (a) the preferences of wine enthusiasts and collectors generally and especially (b) wine drinkers overall.

The other thing is that average probably reflects a large majority who drank 07 (and probably all vintages) young. I’m guessing 07 doesn’t fare as highly if you sorted it for “scores 8+ years out” somehow.

Also, at 91.3 points, 200 & 2001 appear to be tied, and yet the 2001 is the better vintage.

Red, CNdP, 2007 grouped by the year the note was written

2017 2.3% Notes (203) / Avg. 89.9 pts. in 151 ratings
2016 10.5% Notes (923) / Avg. 91.8 pts. in 793 ratings
2015 10.8% Notes (945) / Avg. 91.4 pts. in 807 ratings
2014 12.6% Notes (1,108) / Avg. 91.6 pts. in 954 ratings
2013 12.4% Notes (1,093) / Avg. 91.4 pts. in 969 ratings
2012 12.4% Notes (1,085) / Avg. 91.1 pts. in 914 ratings
2011 14.4% Notes (1,269) / Avg. 91.0 pts. in 1,083 ratings
2010 15.3% Notes (1,341) / Avg. 91.4 pts. in 1,107 ratings
2009 9.1% Notes (800) / Avg. 92.0 pts. in 663 ratings
2008 0.2% Notes (16) / Avg. 93.7 pts. in 13 ratings

Not a surprise at all. The pro rankings are high, based mostly on RMP’s ratings, thus folks don’t want to act like they know ‘more’ and fall into ranking with what others say.

This would be a great refinement to CT . . . an ability to slice the score data over time (e.g., trends, only in last 5 years, etc.).

Parker almost universally wrote off 02 in CdP. The high rating here cannot be laid at his doorstep. It is probably more the well-known psychological bias of liking the wines one buys.

You can already do all that in Advanced Search and then summarize by year.

Interesting analysis! My view on this is:
in 2008 & 2009 scores were probably influenced by high Parker praise… but as of 2010 to 2016 they are pretty stable around 91.4… even increasing to 91.8 in 2016

The 2017 effect is due to ONE person called ACYSO (from this board?)… who has rated 11 wines with an average score of 64.8???.. If you remove just that extreme user, the average for 2017 would be 92,17 points on 782 notes… again increasing form 2016

Which is always the problem. Then you add the people who had their first wine around the time of its release and three years later say their palates have changed and they no longer like CdP.

Anyway, someone should tell Bob he blew it and that it is only the second best vintage in viticultural history.

I am a big fan of CdP and also of the '07’s. Just really started drinking the '07’s but so far I have not been disappointed.

Moral of the story: 2007 just gets bretter and bretter every year!

Is it possible that people anchor to critics’ assessments? Mais non…

Regardless of what you think of the 07s, you should be able to understand the responses of who disagree easily enough. They are distinctive wines. Some people will think they are distinctively bad, others distinctively good. The idea that anyone will be able to prove one of these positions to someone who doesn’t share it is–well–distinctive.

Points are the one aspect of CT I’ll happily ignore. I understand there is a demand for them, and others appreciate them, but they are pretty useless to me.

Hi Jonathan, yes for sure 2007 seems a polarizing vintage… with lovers and haters, just a question of personal preference! If you compare it to cheese, some of the high end strong cheeses like Gorgonzola or époisse are also loved and hated…

My analysis is that Burg lovers in general will prefer lighter Chateauneufs styles like Rayas, Charvin, Pégau… and the stronger ones like Clos Saint-Jean or 2007 vintage are a little bit like the blue cheeses… either loved or hated

Hi Ian, I tend to agree… To me points are interesting when you know the taster has the same style preference as you, and you look at the delta and not absolute values…
