humidity?

With the weather being a bit drier in the winter months, I’ve been wondering about humidity control in my Vinotheque wine “cellar” (big enough for roughly 300 bottles). I’ve heard many different opinions, ranging from “It’s fine in a house, nothing special to be done” to “put a bowl of water in the bottom shelf” to “don’t do that, you’ll get mold on some bottles”.

Advice?

You’re about to get a range of advice here as well.

It’s fine. Nothing special to be done.

what’s the humidity in your wine unit?

I should know that. I don’t. I’ve never noticed a problem with any of my corks drying out, nor with mold, but I’m more wondering if on a typical standalone unit in a house if it is something I need to worry about. i.e., should I install a humidity sensor, etc., worry about adding water, or is a typical standalone high-end unit in a house, given “normal” HVAC usage in the house, ok?

The temperature in the house is kept anywhere between 72 and 76 degrees year round. The unit temperature is kept at 55 degrees.
