A Few Fine Value Carmenere from Chile

These aren’t really TNs, just reflections on a couple of eye-openers for me.
I was invited to participate in a tasting of some recent release Carmeneres from Chile last night. I don’t profess to know anything about Chilean wines, don’t own any, and have had few bottles over the years.
That said, there were several bottles last night that were really terrific wines made in a restrained style. There were also a couple of overoaked croakers that were really not my cup of tea.

Most of these are $12-$18 wines. Some thoughts on the better wines:

2007 Odfjell Armador-Terrific coriander and tarry nose. Spice box-Red fruit wrapped in herbal notes. Silky tannins. Great with the steak.

2007 Cono Sur Vision-Licorice notes. Soft, polished. Bitter chocolate. Ready to drink and enjoy.

2007 Venisquero Grey-Dark, dark wine. Some herbal notes on the nose. Sophisticated. Old world. Bright red fruit and pepper. Integrated.

2007 Terra Andina Altos–Kicking bottle of wine for $18. Sweet spice, cedar. Cocoa and coffee notes. Clean profile. Very nice. Long.
