RIESLINGFEIER 2016

The Rieslingfeier will take place in the coming days in NY. Please post your impressions here. I am quite curious. DANKE

Martin - There is still time for you to come! Winemakers start arriving tomorrow.

Robert,

in my thoughts I am with you all in NY. I will attend a little Breuer “Schlossberg” vertical on Friday. Where would be the german dry Riesling and Grosse Gewächse without the famous winemaker Bernhard Breuer.

Cheers,
Martin

Martin - one day we will get you here. Next year you and KP must come!

#rieslingfeier2016

I kicked off the Rieslingfeier celebration last night with one of my favorite bottles of Riesling and one that to me captures all I love about German Riesling the 2013 Uli Stein Alfer Hölle. What a stunning and joyful bottle of wine. For those that do not know his is a microscopic vineyard that is one of the oldest in the Mosel and in Germany. It was planted in the early 1900s and is wedged between two residential houses. I have visited the vineyard and it is magical.

An excerpt below from David Schildknecht:

“Given the exceptional quality of Stein’s 600 liters of 2011 Alfer Holle Riesling 1900 I can’t resist sharing its improbable back-story. Immediately behind a wall along the steep road up to – and just 500 meters away from – his home and winery can be glimpsed the tips of a few vines that he had overlooked on a thousand drives but which represent the narrow upper edge of a precipitous plot whose 1,200 minuscule-berried vines were planted in 1900, their roots now hanging fantastically in the air where the slate has eroded away. These had not only also remained undetected from the shoreline below, but had never officially been assigned to an Einzellage. After their owner’s death in late 2010, his widow made a flabbergasted Stein aware of the parcel’s existence and asked if he’d like to acquire it. After arranging to begin vinifying its fruit, Stein approached a label collector in nearby Bullay about possibly digging-up and reviving an old design and, amazingly, within a few minutes the fellow came up with one from 1900 depicting the Alfer Holle and the hill on which sits Stein’s Haus Waldfrieden!”

Ever since I signed up the website has said the complete list of wines for the Grand Tasting will be available soon. I suppose waiting until after the event ensures accuracy…

Great story and I promise I will not only order the wine, but visit the place. I have to see it, thank you!

Jay asks and he receives…I was going to be a wiseass and say Riesling but I would not do that to you!

Nice!

Lineup is incredible! Anyone in the NYC area and is still on the fence this should change your mind. Unbelievable opportunity to explore Riesling for $29.

Incredible to say the least! Won’t miss it next year for sure. Was telling a friend about it just last night!

I may do the Prum table at home!

I am bringing 59 & 71 Prum TBA to the dinner!

I think I will have to juggle the kid and make it. Nice line up. I may need a tongue transplant half way through though.

I don’t know if I’m more excited to taste the producers I know I love or the ones I’ve never tried before.

Fortunately I don’t have to decide.

Less than 48 hours to go…

Pretty psyched…signed up for the VIP session though unfortunately I probably can’t stay much longer than the hour. More for the rest of you!

I’d be interested to read your thoughts! I’ve only had a couple of vintages ('04 and '09, don’t think any others), but what I’ve tasted has been very interesting.

Glad you have the cash to spare.

I have tasted those 2014 Leitz wines- very enjoyable!

i never understand these comments. unless it’s sarcasm of course, in which case i humbly retreat

Indeed sarcasm.
