Sandlands 2013 Carignane

Popped with thanksgiving dinner. Very shy and non committal upon first glass but boy howdy on day 2 and day 3 did this wine just take off. Beautiful high toned notes of crunchy brambly red fruit with nice acid balance.I was just wowed by the aromatics on this wine as well.

Much more complete and focused on day 3 leading me to think this wine needs at least 3-5 years in the cellar to be fully fleshed out. Unfortunately I was only alloted this one bottle. Delicious!

Brain, thank you for the great note. I opened up my bottle as well with Thanksgiving dinner and totally agree with your notes. This wine is going to be great in a couple years. Hope I get allocated more in the future as well, Tegan is doing some really amazing things there.

Love the fact that you mentioned “crunchy red fruit”, as never had that descriptor been more apparent to me than in this wine. I really enjoyed this one, and wish I had a few more to lay down.

The 2011 is amazing too.

I opened mine as soon as it arrived, and was heartbroken. The aromatics were insane! The palate was borderline undrinkable - acid, acid, acid. I emailed Mr Passalacqua, and he basically said that the wine was fine and I probably didn’t like higher acidity in wines.

A week after my initial pop-n-pour, I pulled the cork, and almost had an olfactory overload. Violets, lilacs, blackberries, red, zingy berry scents, with some other stuff, too. Sadly, it had pooped out on flavor. I still wonder what the wine could have shown me if I had treated it respectfully…

I just ordered a bottle of '13 Sandlands Carignane from a site identified by Wine Searcher. I wanted to get a few, but I received a message stating that the inventory was one lonely bottle.

When I completed my transaction, I hopped on Wine Searcher again, and eventually discovered that the retail website had more Sandlands Carignane, but it will not allow you to purchase more than one bottle per sale.

I’m not willing to pay $20-something for shipping over and over as means of acquiring a handful of the stuff.

Anyone else encounter a similar situation?

Huh…that’s some BS if you ask me. Did you try calling them and mentioning the issue? I really like this wine as well, but am totally with you about not wanting to pay $20 in shipping for a single bottle at a time.

Let us know how it shakes out - curious as to how the retailer handles this.

I suspect the retailer doesn’t update their inventory in real time, and had no more bottles.

So, I just got off the phone with a rep for AllStar Wines. He said that they only received a couple of bottles of Sandlands Carignane 2013, and that inventory is immediately updated online. The Wine Searcher site is notified by the retailer of the updated inventory, but sometimes Wine Searcher is slower on the uptake.

In other words, no more Sandlands.

I mean…1 bottle of Sandlands is better than no bottles of Sandlands…even considering the shipping costs.

Hoping the 2016 allocation comes early next year, as I am currently “Sandlands-less” as well.

There was another website that featured Sandlands Mataro 2010, with the statement to call your order in - they had been sold out long ago.

Sandlands, to my understanding, once would offer two releases a year. Now, I have to wait until March or May before the next vintage wines are attainable. sigh

We had a bottle of the 13 last night and found it stunning: perfectly contouring that fine line between savory & sweet. Scrumptious wine!

Slight thread drift, but has anyone popped a 13 chenin recently? Feel like I should be checking in on one soon.

I opened a 13 Amador Chenin in Jan and it was ready; my best experience with the chenins across 11-14.

Yup, opened one for Turkey Day. Very restrained for the first two hours, then sang thereafter.

I was just surfing through CellarTracker TN’s, trying to determine what wines were good to go. Here I am, back on the forum and BAM a note for Sandlands’ 2013 Mendocino Carignan!
