Acid freak alert: 2013 La Clarine Farm Petit Manseng (USA, California, Sierra Foothills)

  • 2013 La Clarine Farm Petit Manseng - USA, California, Sierra Foothills (5/21/2015)
Thoroughly impressed with this engaging, singular bottling. The nose intrigues from the start, with wax, elderflower, lemon curd, and a nutty rancio edge. The palate commands attention: loads of lemon/lime, faint nutty/butterscotch, tart apple, but the show-stealer is the searing acid spine that holds it all together. The wine only gains force as it gets to room temperature, the acid becoming even more commanding. This wine absolutely needs food, and performs beautifully at the table with seafood and risotto.

We had the 15 last night and I’m trying to author a tasting note but failing. Loved the wine though.

I do not understand the virtue of searing acidity … an unripe grape is full of acidity, which -fortunately- steps back due to better ripeness, acidity is imho to give balance and liveliness, but not to command a wine …

Try this instead for about $13 Domaine des Cassagnoles Côtes de Gascogne Reserve Selection Manseng. Excellent quality and readily available.
