2015 Sonoma County zin. Great wine. Went great with herb crusted chicken parm. Mike O was right in his assessment that this one could have been labeled reserve. Fresh red fruit and great balance to the bright acidity. Relied on Carlisle to close my weekend on a positive wine note after several disappointments and it delivered. Unreal QPR in this vintage. Wish i had loaded up when i had the chance.

2011 Grand Noir Dommen Ranch - I appreciated the relatively lighter body, lower alc level and the solid dose of acid. Is that mostly the cool 2011 vintage, which I tend to be a fan of, or the grape?

Just posted a TN on 2013 Gruner Veltliner. Very nice instance of a varietal that sometimes gets short shrift from both producers and consumers. Delicious.

Agreed, the new site is a good improvement.

Does anybody know which of the 2016 wines will be released in July? The site indicates that the last of the wines from that vintage will be released then.

It will take a little work, but you could go back to the website and open up the last pre-release newsletter and eliminate those wines from the overall portfolio. I assume the release will at least include Carlisle and Papera Zins. Cheers!

In this release is the 16 Alicante Bouschet. I tasted that from barrel last year and it was sick. Dark as pen ink, it reminded me of Palisades petite in color but darker if you can believe me. Mike didn't make much of it. Not sure how it finally evolved when it went to bottle but i will take any of that i am offered. :)
My WOTY candidates for 2019:
2014 Marie Courtin Eloquence Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut
2017 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Occidental Ridge SC PN
2017 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Platt SC PN
2017 Kutch Pinot Noir SC PN
2009 Roederer Cristal Brut

My best wines of 2018:
2017 Kutch Falstaff Sonoma Coast PN
2012 Marguet La Grande Ruelle Ambonnay

Kindness matters.

I found the photo of the Alicante Bouschet. Check out that beauty, and it's only about an ounce in that little tasting glass. [truce.gif]

I do wish that Carlisle would offer more oddball varietal wines - like the Teinturiers and the "Papera Ranch" Carignan - in the future!!! :)

My fav oddball wine from Carlisle was/is the Grand Noir. Had one so far and sitting on two more I think. Very old world earthy charm.

That Carignane was delicious - I remember buying it for a few years and then it was never offered again. Wish I had held on to a bottle or 2 to see how it aged.

I wonder why they are doing a summer release this year when it's always been a spring and fall release looking back at the last 10 years?

You're right, I had to go back and dig into my email archives, but it's January and July every year. Different than what this http://www.winerelease.com/WineryInfo/0001481.html showed. November is just when I receive my wine every year because it's finally out of the 100's here.[tumbleweed.gif]

Anybody try a Grenache or Mourvedre from last years release?

Popped a '16 Dry Creek Valley Zin last night and WOW. I enjoy this wine in every vintage, but was very surprised at how incredibly well this is drinking early. Has anyone else opened 16's yet? I was skeptical and bummed out when Mike chose not to make a Sonoma Zin becuase the vintage was "too good" but if this is any indication I can't imagine what the other wines are like.

92 points: P&P. Fully mature me thinks, and really showing well. The acidity really stood out this go around but not overpowering the lush Montafi profile. Definitely a cool vintage and a real treat as my third and final bottle of the 11 Montafi. Drink now.

Tomorrow? I thought the pre-release was in two days (the 18th)?

BTW, didn't you see that I have called dibs on all of the Alicante. Sheesh. You already got to try it a year ago, didn't you?

I was wondering the same thing the other day. Any of several varieties found interspersed in the "Carlisle Vineyard", or one of the other sources, could bear a great range of possibilities...

2014 The Derivative

It always kills me how this wine can initially seem kind of ponderous and almost blowsy before completely transforming into a racy, citrus-laden wine chock-full of minerals...and although I'd portray the 2014 as being perhaps a bit "softer" than previous vintages, all of the qualities which make this such a fun, unique blend are once again there in spades. At any rate, another great Mike OFFICER Production and one which seems to be just entering into the zone of drinkability; I'll probably wait another 1-2 years before opening another bottle.

If Compagni-Portis is my fave Carlisle white in terms of pure pleasure & exuberant joy, The Derivative is my favorite for intrigue & contemplation.

Killer note as always my man! And I very much agree - love both Derivitive and Compagni-Portis, and your descriptors around what makes them so damn good are spot on.

And force of habit I'm sure....but think you meant Mike O and not Mike Smith in this case ;)
