2014 Scarlett Cabernet, drinking much better than the 2014 Quivet at this point.

I bought very few 2011 cabs, and have been checking in on the few I did purchase recently. Had 2 glasses via pungo of the 2011 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Three Twins Vineyard and enjoyed it. Plenty of fruit in the flavor profile but not that lush mouthfeel I usually get from Myriad cabs. I plan on drinking my other bottles in the relative near term.

Had an '08 Myriad Las Madres Esther Block this weekend and confirmed that the '08 Syrahs are really in a good place. (Have also had the Myriad 100% whole cluster and the Quivet Hulda block '08 Las Madres in recent months as well - equally/nearly as good).
  • 2008 Myriad Cellars Syrah Las Madres Vineyard - USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros (4/7/2018)
Dinner with the Davids (Home): Bottle says Esther Block, but CT doesn't register the 2008. Decanted an hour. What a dark beauty this is. Super crazy nose of cured, brined olives and black fruit. Bright red and black cherry, ripe plums, more olive tapenade, and game meat. Still some tannic spine. Full throttle, but not overdone in the slightest - was fresh and alluring. Everyone loved this. We opened one of those at the Las Madres Winemakers Luncheon last week. Notes are spot in, drinking beautifully with absolutely no decline.

Tonight...

Yes... There are about 30+ tasting notes on Cellar Tracker. It is delicious, but I’d give it another year in bottle. It is dominated by Amarena black cherry syrup and vanilla notes currently. Fun and full of flavor, but still has room to grow and integrate.

2010 Three Twins Cab - The nose really popped from the bottle right at opening - really enticing - blue/black fruits, leather, cassis, spice and flowers. The wine was lush with a lot of depth to the flavors - no noticeable oak, seamless, with just a little tannin to give some grip to the finish. I wish I had more. Cheers!

PnP. Sweet on the nose, but savory on the palate. Resolved tannins with some white pepper on the finish. If I had more, would hold a few more years to allow more complexity to develop. Well done!

2010 Myriad Cellars ‘Three Twins Vineyard’ Cabernet Sauvignon

Always a treat. I’m a huge fan of Mike’s Three Twins cab and the 2010 continues to drink at peak - dark and delicious.

Equally delicious for me to be honest. I know that doesn’t help but I’d say the cabs are also similar. The cabs priced similarly are similar quality from my experience, with some vintage variance.

Different blocks and different clones. The Myriad is red fruit leaning while the Quivet is blue fruited and more intense. Both give Las Madres olive notes.

On Superbowl Sunday I drank a '16 Becklyn Napa cab.

At the Di Fara offline I drank a '14 Becklyn Napa cab.

Both were young, and oh so delicious. I can't imagine how they'll improve in 5 years. Maybe I'll save my last '14 till then.

Friday night had the 2015 Quivet LPV Cab - love the wine. Drinking great, would like to have given it a little air to open up as the second half of the bottle was best after an hour of sitting on the table

All excellent and drinking right in our wheel house.

Finally worked up enough bravery to open a 2012 Myriad Cab, went for the NV and I'm happy to report it's finally starting to open. Enjoyed the bottle over a couple of hours and it continually improved with air...has really transformed into a beautiful Napa Cab vs. the closed, unforgiving brute it was on release. Based on this bottle, I think the 2012 Myriad Cabs could still use 1-2 more years but that said, no harm at all in opening one right now - just be sure to give it some air.

    2010 Quivet Cabernet Sauvignon Kenefick

Wow - this was on fire! Blind, I would have called this as a 2007 or 2008 - showed none of the 2010 rigid angularness and was instead just wave after wave of lush fruits. Might have been the best Quivet Cab I've ever had, so pure and seamless. Opened after a 2001 Chateau Bel-Air Pomerol, which was quite nice but couldn't hold a candle to the Quivet.

Opened a 2017 Myriad Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, our first Mike Smith wine other than this year's Carter lineup and will not be our last. Decanted for about an hour and I can't think of a wine we've had this year that comes close at that price range. Great into to their wines for sure and looking forward to getting ahold of some more!

I just got the offer for the leftover Myriad 2017s. I've only had two Myriad wines (2014 Madres Syrah, and 2017 Georges III Cab) and loved them. However there's so many cuvees to choose from and I'm already over budget, so of the Myriad Cabs (2017), which do you think offer the best value (i.e., are the less expensive ones still great / great for the price, or are they like any other $70 - $100 Napa Cab)?

The '17 Napa Valley Myriad and Quivet are quite good and drinking well early. They don't seem to be as affected as the single vineyard wines for the down year of 2017, maybe creative blending has kept the quality up. Definitely worth picking up a few, they drink as good as any other NV cab in that price range in recent years.

I wouldn't be surprised to see some of the single vineyard wines for below release price on the secondary market at some point at or after the '18s come out so no reason to go in on those now, IMO. For '17 Mike's wines I went heavier on the Napa Valleys and picked up a small sample of the single vineyard stuff, mostly to have those as reference points down the road.

The Semillon is on that leftover list and is quite good stuff, an easy drinker that goes well with just about anything. Definitely worth filling in your shipment with a few of those.

The 2017 Myriad Three twins was showing well when I had it last month, but I just had a 2016 Becklyn NV this week, and it was fantastic PnP and even better on the second day.

Had the 2016 Myriad Cab Napa last night. Very harsh and biting on PnP but a whole different wine (for the better) after 3 hours in the decanter.

Becklyn 2016, give it a 2 hour decant and you will be glad you did. The nose really kicks in and the fruit comes alive and the oak takes a back seat. Tannins are not harsh at all for being so young. I will allow the rest of my bottles rest a few years and probably check in on a 2012 or 2014 next.

Has a Myriad '13 Napa last night. Took a while to open up, and was a little hot. Three hours later it was damn nice.

Ridiculously floral Cab nose, reminds me of 2007 with the brightness of 2012 and a dash of 2005's more cool year complexity - oodles of fresh, vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon fruits combined with hints of spice and an underlying herbaceous complexity. Palate is just redonk, huge impact of youthful Cab flavors along with an impression of minerals and little-to-no discernible oak. Soaring close. If opening now, I'd splash decant for 30 minutes and just feast (did a pop and pour tonight, was immediately great but started cruising into the stratosphere after a good 30-45 minutes in glass).

I'll say it again, Mike just killed his 2017s.
