Ok guys, school me on something here.

I've been a buyer of Myriad going back to the '10s, but I've only bought the cabs during that time. Over the last couple years I've also started to increase the % of Syrah I'm holding in my cellar so naturally I now have some interest in the Myriad Syrahs. I know Mike makes a few different ones, but can anyone give me a high level overview on the style of Syrah he makes?

I push up the window, nobody in sight. The dog barely moves. good, I am in. I slowly navigate myself towards the dining room where a small cellar is kept with some true gems, or so I am told. A light flickers, I run and hide behind the couch as someone emerges from a hallway with a baseball bat. He looks around suspiciously and glances at the dog who is still in deep sleep. I think I am ok. He moves to the kitchen, opens the large see-through refrigerator and drinks some milk from a frosty bottle. Replaces it and closes the door and goes back to the bedroom area of the house. I crawl slowly and I open the wine cellar door making sure to be quiet as a mouse and I-spy the most amazing red Burgundy sitting on the top shelf. It has a yellow Post-It note attached and focusing I am able to read it: 'For when Mike Pobega visits'. I stand and yell at the top of my lungs "Mike and Leah, AWAKEN! I have arrived!!"

2009 Three Twins. The last of my three bottles. Maybe a touch of degredation from the youthful wine it was when I had my first bottle, but still a wonderful wine. I really like what Mike does with this vineyard.

Absolutely phenomenal! Pour yourself some Carter Verdad... It'll tell "The Truth" about what Mike was able to do in 2015.

...and the '15 Myriad GIII is hands down the best GIII I've ever had (from Mike or from anyone).

“Discovered” a half full Myriad I opened a week ago and put in a cabinet to stay cool.

More balanced but with equal power to what I recalled tasting a week ago. Dark fruits. Yum. Didn’t last long!

2008 Myriad Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Georges III Vineyard - I opened a bottle of this wine in 2016 and it was incredible, one of the best cabs I drank all year. A year or so later, and the bottle I opened last night seems out of balance and a totally different wine - the fruit was gone and I perceived more alcohol - that lush mouthfeel that I always get from Myriad wasn't there either. First "off" bottle of Myriad for me ever! I am going to revisit tonight.

2010 Dr. Crane Cab - opened my only two bottles for Christmas dinner (prime rib) - decanted for about three hours. Classic cab nose that was rich and inviting. The fruit was not as exuberant as I recalled for the 2009 - a bit more compact, but more complex and spicy with very good balance. Very enjoyable. Looking forward to popping the GIII and Three Twins.

2014 Myriad Syrah Las Madres Esther Block

Phenomenal Syrah, at least for my palate -- huge, herbaceous nose filled with dark fruits and savory notes...nicely structured yet Pinot-esque in terms of elegance.

2014 Myriad Napa Cab

Immediately off the pop, textbook example of super-yummy Napa Cab. Wonderful fruit. With air, the tannins started to peak out and the oak became slightly apparent. Probably best to give these another year to settle and go from there.

Based upon the above and a couple of 2014 Quivet Syrahs, it seems like Mike just knocked it out of the park in 2014...and, especially in comparison to 2012 & 2013, it also seems like 2014 is a better vintage for earlier drinking (at least in terms of Myriad & Quivet).

Opened a ‘15 Quivet Kenefick Ranch CS last night. Right out of the bottle it was incredibly sweet and flabby. Far too sweet for my profile. One our guests took a sip and asked if it was Zin. There are other wines that come to mind but for a $75 Cab or whatever, this was a total disappointment. I pour the glasses back into the bottle and recorked. Will try again tonight.

Is this jamminess a hallmark of Quivet, this vineyard, or Mike’s wines in general? Do they just need time for the fruit to settle? I’ve found the Napa 15s to be riper across the board (side bar, we had some Diamond Creek 15s recently that were, shockingly, a little jammy), but this was certainly one of the sweetest non-dessert wines I’ve had in a long time.

Interested to hear others’ perspective.

For me 2015 has shown the most concentration of fruit than any vintage in recent memory. As Mike’s Cabs go I’m leaving them alone and not opening them for a while. Quivet Kenefick Ranch has always been a pretty big wine. Calistoga is no wimp when it comes to CS fruit and Mike diesn’t make wimpy wines either. They enjoy lots and lots of air when young. I opened a ‘13 Myriad Napa Valley last night that was pretty darn good. Big but balanced big, I have a couple glasses left for tonight so I’ll check back in. I’ll open another one same time next year.

Just YUM. I don't even know what else to say. I've loved Pellet ever since the over-performing 2011 and this iteration only extends my initial impression.

Without reading the label, one would never guess this was a 2011 wine. Lovely fruit, a great mouthfeel, smooth tannins, and a clean finish. Really nice, especially after 4 hrs of air.

2010 Myriad GIII - This bottle was drinking fantastically last night after a few hours in the decanter. Wonderful nose, beautiful fruit, perfect balance. Probably the best cab I have opened in the last six months or so - even better than the 2010 Dr. Crane and I love Dr. Crane. Cheers!

2014 Myriad Three Twins

Really delicious and kept becoming more so over the 2+ hours we enjoyed it. I’m very much enjoying 2014s as an earlier drinking vintage for Napa Cabs in general.

Becklyn 15 Missouri Hopper

Taking one for research

Wow, i drink a lot of Mike Smith wines and this is nothing like most of them. Obviously its young but the fruit is not there at all for a Napa wine, this is floral but very very lean, to me it drinks how i would imagine a first growth Margaux drinking. Its hiding all sorts if goodness deep in there but its not the least bit interested in coming out to play right now. Dont misunderstand, i think the fruit is in there but its hiding.

This is a Napa wine that should not be touched for at least ten years, normally i love the youthful energy of US wines but that is not here, the French have stolen it !!

So hide these away for a long time and they will be spectacular

2014 Scarlett Reserve:

Usually I’ll just post notes on CT, but the ‘14 Reserve continues to show an incredibly amazing display of flavors. Love it!

“Previous notes apply. Coravin pour. I’m really loving this wine as I follow it through its evolution. Wonderful black and dark, dark purple core fruit, with black asphalt, tar, obsidian, black soil, black pen ink, and subtle dark spice (clove; anise).

On the first few sips, I could’ve sworn I was drinking an awesome LPV, as the black, gravelly notes were prominent on the attack. With additional air in the glass, the black, molten fruit (and some dark black raspberry) slowly oozed to the front end. Pure and focused, but also carrying a bad ass gothic streak akin to a hot White Zombie chick with a Jack Skellington tattoo on her back.

This is doing a pretty good job of catching up with the phenomenal ‘15 Scarlett Reserve. The ‘14 makes a compelling argument as to why it belongs in the top tier of Napa Cabs that came out of that vintage. 97+ points, with possible upside in another year or two.

I’ll likely polish off the bottle within the next week or so and give it some more air. I have a feeling it’ll show even better than this glass I had tonight. Release QPR on this is insanely good.”

A 2015 Scarlett Cabernet (non reserve) rose above several CA PN during our holiday dinner and then, like a ghost, vanished off our living room chair fabric when anointed with Wine Away. Mike Smith works miracles. Ham, lamb, potatoes and some asparagus witnessed.

We drank the '15 Myriad Semillon the other night. A delicious wine with an outstanding floral/fragrant nose. My cousin (our host) went crazy over this. Since the '15 is sold out, I'm going to send her a few '17's as a thank you.

2014 Quivet Cab, young but somewhat disappointing. Way too much oak. I sure hope it intergrates with more time in the cellar. Finish wa also short for the Mike Smith wine.... Sorry, I am not feeling this one.....
Cheers,
