Re: California’s great old vine Zinfandel vineyards

I posted this in the Mourvedre topic but in hindsight it belongs here: Three Wine Co has an Evangelho Zin, I have a few of these in my cellar: http://www.threewinecompany.com/home/three/dirt%20MATTers%202007%20Evangelho%20Zinfandel.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ...claims Evangel...

Re: Who makes your favorite domestic Mourvedre?

I have Evangelho as a 1910 planting. The only user of these grapes besides JM that I can identify is Orion Swift, in their "Salado" Zinfandel blend (which includes Monte Rosso, Duarte, Tofannelli, Beatty Ranch and others - interesting). I'd be interested in any info on Evangelho. Mike - Three Wine ...

Re: Who makes your favorite domestic Mourvedre?

I'm glad to see this thread - Mourvedre is one of my favorite grapes and really deserves some more love in California. In Livermore we have a new winery Les Chênes which has a very young Mourvedre vineyard. I recently tasted the first vintage from these vines, and it was light, almost a rosé. I hope...

Re: Private Appointment Tasting Etiquette

The scenario in the OP is clearly over the top, but let me pose a question that's a little more down to earth: On a recent trip through Amador County, my wife and I had on our list a place recommended by a friend, which held tastings by appointment only. We had already bought 3 cases of wine at our ...

Re: BYO Etiquette - Advice?

My understanding is the traditional reason for high restaurant markups on wine is to deal with cellaring/aging and to offset the cost of bad/returned bottles. In this scenario, BYO/corkage is to bring in that very special bottle e.g. popping a 25 year old bottle on your 25th anniversary. Just my opi...

Re: Laughter at Ledson

My boss is a member there and so I generally get quite to taste quite a bit of the wine when I visit his house. Your description of the wines & tasting room is right on, they are overpriced and quite full of themselves, although the cult wine banner I think was tongue-in-cheek. I don't mind drinking...

I don't see anything wrong with how this was sent out, and I'm not sure how M&E could have done it differently. They have 900 bottles & 300 mags, so they could have had up to 1500 750ml bottles. Is that enough for everyone on the active list to have an allocation of 1 bottle? I'm not sure of the num...

Re: The wine biz PP (Pre Parker)

I'm a little too young to be "pre-Parker" but my exposure to wine was before my exposure to Parker. This came sometime around 1990 on a trip with my college French class I tasted a CdP, and it was one of those moments when I thought, "yes this is what wine should taste like..." When I got home I rea...

Re: Has Parker joined the Anti-Flavor Wine Elite?

Isn't this a Jay Miller note? Indeed it is Jay Miller. A case of sycophancy? Technically he's saying people who like these austere wines are "more sophisticated" than his boss. It seems we've entered a new era of wine review - where one passes judgment on the people who like the wine, not the wine ...

I've recently read The Klinker Brick has one of the better reputations for Lodi. They've got a shelf full at our local Safeway, and I've been meaning to check it out. Thanks for the note. I hear the sentiments on local. Being here in Livermore, I've been trying to find a local gem. Haven't yet, but ...

I was at a tasting where someone not only inserted it blind, but talked it up (and truely believed what he was saying too [middle-finger.gif] ) that this was a fantastic, incredible wine. Even with the sell job, we took a sniff and tossed it out immediately. I am glad you posted this because that w...

As a coincidence, after a recent trip through Sonoma on a very hot day, I brought along a couple styrofoam shippers, with cold 1L water bottles in every other spot. The wine arrived home cool to the touch. Maybe this was overkill, but it touched off a debate between me and my friend on the trip, how...

Blind Tasting - California Field Blends

First post - I've been enjoying reading this forum and I'm learning that I don't know nearly as much about wine as I thought I did... These are notes from a tasting I held a couple weeks ago. The theme was California field blends, including wines in the spirit of the field blend: single vineyard old...
