What bottle of wine did you open today?

Here in Charleston, SC for our annual trek to the Wine and Food festival. Met up with our friends that live in Mt. Pleasant for dinner and cracked open: 2012 Scherrer Old and Mature Vines zin 2012 Scherrer Shale Terrace zin. The O&M showed a bit better at this point in time but both were very good a...

C. Da Silva 1934 Port - any info?

We popped the cork last night. The cork was very soft and crumbled under the cork screw, wish I had my ah-so but I managed to remove it almost intact. A strong vanilla scent came wafting out of the bottle along with a good hit of butterscotch. In the glass the wine is brown but clear, the color of s...

C. Da Silva 1934 Port - any info?

Jeremy, I saw your note while searching this forum, for some reason I kind of got the Indian spice market reference, which is giving me some pause but we'll forge ahead. Looks like we'll be opening this up this evening, might have to take a stroll through the eastern spice section of the grocery bef...

C. Da Silva 1934 Port - any info?

Andy, tx for the info! There's definitely a decent amount of sediment on the bottom. Not sure how well this has been stored. I'm guessing it's been in my Aunt's house sitting on a side bar, upright and room temp so I'm not expecting a lot upon opening but the education will be worth something. I'll ...

C. Da Silva 1934 Port - any info?

Having a small family get together in Isle of Palms (SC) and the wife's aunt brought along this bottle of 1934 C. Da Silva Port (bottled in 1973). I've scoured the depth and breadth of worldly wine knowledge (aka WB website and google) and all I can find is the Da Silva web site but no info on this ...

WINERIES TO VISIT IN LIVERMORE VALLEY

Visited in '11 and stopped in at most of the wineries mentioned above. Really enjoyed the reserve tasting at Steven Kent. Another nice experience is John Christopher Cellars, downtown and just down the street from Uncle Yu's.

This article is spot on. Fred and Judi are some of the nicest people on the planet and they make great wine also. I had an added bonus at last Novembers open house when I got to talk (aka listen) with Fred's dad Ed about his wine growing days in Alexander Valley - great experience.

I'll also be ordering a mixed case of each. Had the pleasure of tasting with Robin Akhurst last fall (thanks to Brian for the rec) and absolutely enjoyed the whole experience. Great guy, great wine. And while we're on the Scherrer band wagon, his syrahs and cabs can be phenomenal. For our mortgage burning party we did magnums of his '04, '05 and '06 cabs, everyone enjoyed every last drop.

TN: 2013 Idlewild Carignan Testa Vineyard (USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County)

As promised here's my TN: Very pleasant Carignane from Testa in Mendocino. There's crushed black cherry and a hit alcohol on the nose (even though it's only 13.7% abv). More black cherry on the tongue along with candied fig, the slightest hint of black licorice, lively acidity, medium fine tannins a...

Is it time to say farewell to Linne Calodo?

Visited and tasted LC back in '08 and was impressed with their stuff but didn't join. We belong to two Paso wine clubs, Adelaida and Tablas Creek. Adelaida is a decent cellar defender, Tablas has wine and prices that run the gamut. If your "other producer" isn't Tablas, I'd suggest giving them a look.

Haven't had much experience with older vintage pinot but plan to soon. I enjoy pinot with good acidity, medium to fine tannin and fresh red fruit. +2 Hoage, you'll find some great Syrah there. Also for something a bit different check out Tolo and Kiamie. Both are small production wineries with tasting rooms right next to each other on Adelaida Rd.

Just got back from a golf outing on the west side but have been to the east side twice. Besides the Old course, by far the best all around experience was Royal Aberdeen. Great links course, loads of history (check out the "black ball" box in one of their showcases) and a fair test of your skills. Ha...
