When I tasted 90 Haut Brion- I loved it and saw the price inmost stores in NY was 80 a bottle- cleaned out 3 different retailers

The biggest problem with old DRC is that it was bottled barrel by barrel( even today its only bottled 6 barrels at a time) -so there's a reasonable amount of variation. Drank a stunning bottle of '78 Guigal La Landonne with a few of my kids last night to accompany 2 legs of baby lamb.Best lamb I've ever had, wine wasn't to shabby either.Always nice drinking with my kids .

Depends how long your time horizon is. Likely all of today's prices for great burgundies will only go higher over the next 5,10,15 and 20 years.Since most of the red wines I buy can't be drunk for 7-25 years - this is just a small blip in an ever increasing scarcity of great wines.

Greg- guess you've never tasted good bottles of 90,78,61,59,45 or 29 La Chapelle.All legendary wines and although I love Chave and JL/Erin , old La Chapelle in good condition are very hard to beat ( IMHO )

There is really no limit on decanting.Have had open bottles in my fridge for unlimited( years ) periods of time with very little degradation.An hour or 2 should be enough for a 75,younger vintages I'd decant longer, depending on age.

all the 04 from the domaine are beautiful wines and have been drinking perfectly for the last 5 years. Very precocious for DRC's, and the Montrachet has always been stunning.Glad you enjoyed it.

Always nice to read about your amazing leisurely meals.Fabulous line-up.Sounds like the wines performed beautifully and it was a fruit or flower day. I don't ever recall having the 71 Cristal, so I'll have to ask a couple of friends if they have it. The wine sounds stunning.

Eric's suggestion of 2000 CSJ Rousseau is great. Beautiful wine.1000-1600 ( cheaper availability in Europe ) To be fair, lots of good DRC Echezeaux and Grands Echezeaux available in a similar price range.

oh Victor- have very fond memories of the 85 Quintarelli.Drank it off the list at a hotel in Sirmione on Lake Garda- near Verona. A great amarone iirc. First Quintarelli I had ever tasted.

Esca for the grilled octopus, pasta neri ( squid ink pasta w cuttlefish ),the best linguini with clam sauce in the city,and all the fish is great esp the branzino for 2 cooked in salt . Crudo and salads are very good- near the theatre district . Pretty casual. Also love Pasquale Jones for casual.

I have such great memories of eating there on my honeymoon in '87. Wine list was good then and Jayer was pretty cheap. All in all, a perfect combo. One of the more romantic restaurants in Paris at the time, and I loved the Place des Vosges. Beautiful spot.

Have always enjoyed the 86 Rauzan Segla, and its been drinking well for many years.( should be drunk sooner anyway) and the 89 PLL is delicious( for a bordeaux )

I find with Sauternes, it's about the light- that determines how dark it gets. Wines in sealed cases seem to maintain the lighter color better- not that it matters.

Always love old Vega. Had a '57 that was delicious while in Spain at least 10 yrs ago. Never had the 58 and all the 62's/68's have been disappointing. Love the 70, but it's much more primary, than wines 20-30 yrs older. I'll have to find a good 48 to try.Thanks for the note.
